2. Why doesn’t the plan for Jonas’s escape work out?
The plan does not work out because Jonas’s father mentions at dinner time
that they are going to release Gabriel in the morning, so Jonas runs away and
takes Gabriel with him.
Chapter 22, Pages 171-174
1. What new things and images and feelings do Jonas and Gabe experience in
Chapter 22? They are shown animals, rain, sunshine, cold, being scared,
confused, hunger, not sameness.
2. Why does Jonas no longer to care about himself? He cares about Gabriel’s
wellbeing. It was more important than his own life. He loves Gabe as his
brother.
Chapter 23, Pages 175-180
1. How are these details significant in Chapter 23: weather, snow, sled, music?
weather- for the first time they experience weather: It is a sign that they
have reached elsewhere.
Snow: represents innocence.
Sled: represents his first memory
Music: does not exist in the community. Something new.
2. Was the reader led to believe that Gabe could survive in a different kid of
community? (Answers will vary.) No, because… or Yes, because...
3. Why do you think the author ended the story as Jonas was traveling toward his
destination? The author lets the reader decide what happens to Jonas and
Gabriel. The ending is inconclusive. The reader is left hanging...it’s up to
them to decide how the book ends.
4. What questions did the author leave unanswered at the end of the book? How
did you interpret the ending? Did you approve of the ending? (Answers will vary. )
