Shakespeare for Children and Young People
This popular one-day course outlines a practical approach for teaching
Shakespeare to children and young people from key stage 2 right up to
teenagers and adults. We explore a range of enjoyable and accessible drama
games and strategies that will quickly get students involved in the world of the
play and enable the teacher/practitioner to explore character, language and
staging ideas through practical methods. A range of script extracts are used
during the day to demonstrate how the approaches can be used with any of
Shakespeare’s plays.
We will explore:






Staging the play
Using a playful approach
Entering the world of the play
Exploring and enjoying the language
Developing characters
Tips on directing and production skills
This one-day CPD course is suitable for teachers, freelance theatre directors,
drama practitioners and actors who would like to teach Shakespeare through
practical methods, whether the aim is to direct a whole Shakespeare play,
improve literacy or just introduce primary or secondary students to characters,
scenes and stories in a way that they will never forget. The emphasis will be on
a relaxed and informal atmosphere – you will leave inspired, refreshed and with
a new skill set of ideas and approaches.
“I found David’s experience and the quality of the course very inspiring. The
approach of building layer upon layer coherently is brilliant.” – Hattie Slim,
Participant, March 2014.
“A tour-de-force of a day!” – Jonathan Buxton, Teacher, Milton Hall Primary
School, October 2014.
