The picture was brought to Rome at the end of the 15th century. It was venerated there for 300 years, but the church was destroyed and the picture was lost until 1865. When the Diocese was created in 1878, Our Lady, under this title, was declared Principal Patron. St. Irenaeus: born around 130, he became bishop of Lyons (France); his writing and preaching was mainly directed against Gnosticism, emphasising that God wished all to be saved and is freely revealed in Jesus his Son. He was martyred around the year 200. CATHEDRAL NOVENA: Our annual Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help concludes on Tuesday, 27th June; the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The Novena takes place after evening Mass at 6.00 p.m. Monday & Tuesday in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Cathedral Hall and immediately after the evening Masses on Saturday and Sunday at Holy Trinity, Boar Lane. SUNDAY EVENING MASS: We asked at this Mass a couple of weeks ago if you would prefer the time of Mass to be changed to an earlier time. The vast majority that expressed an opinion said they would like an earlier Mass on a Sunday evening and 6.00 p.m. seemed the most popular time. Please let the priest know this Sunday and next week your views on changing the time to 6.00 p.m. and then we will announce the decision in July for the change to take place at the beginning of August. STRAWBERRY FAYRE: Next Saturday, 1st July, 2.00-4.00 p.m. at Mount St. Joseph’s Home, Shire Oak Road, Headingley, Leeds 6 (tel: 0113 278 4101). All proceeds will go to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
