Frequently Asked Questions: Where is the Village? The Village is located on the property of the Belleville Police Service at 93 Dundas Street East in Belleville. Is there a cost to visit the Village? Admission to the Village is free. Is there a cost for bussing? The cost of bussing is the responsibility of the school. Buses are asked to park on South John Street in the designated area. Your class will be met by a Village staff member upon arrival. For those traveling a great distance to the Village, you may want to combine another class excursion in Belleville on the same day. Do we need parent volunteers? Yes, we will rely on the help from parent volunteers. Parent volunteers are required to lead the children around the Village during the practical portion of the visit. We are requesting 1 parent for every 5 students as per school board policy. How many students can attend at once? There is no minimum number of students required, but the maximum capacity of students at one time will be 30 students. I have a split class, can both grades attend at the same time? No, the Village curriculum has been designed to teach specific topics to specific grades (pedestrian safety for grade two, road safety to grade three and bicycle to grade four). Each topic will be taught at different times of the school year. As a result, we are asking that students within the specific grade only attend during the specified time. Split classes are encouraged to combine with another same grade where possible to reduce busing costs. What will the visit consist of? The class will run approximately 1½ hours in length. The session will start with classroom discussion as a large group. This will be 20-30 minutes in length. The students will then go out into the Village to practice what they have learned for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Students will participate in a simple scavenger hunt while out in the Village. The class will be divided in half for the practical session out in the Village. For example, in grade 3, while half of the class is driving the mini cars, the other half will be working on the scavenger hunt and acting as pedestrians. They will then reverse. It would be helpful if you could have the class divided prior to the visit, so they know what activity they will be starting with out in the Village. Are snacks or lunches permitted? Please do not bring snacks to the Village, due to the risk of students with peanut or similar types of allergies. What if it’s bad weather? The Village is still open. The Children’s Safety Village will run from September to June every year. We ask that the students attending in the winter months are dressed appropriately to be outside for approximately one hour. On rainy days, we will be providing rain ponchos to all students and adult helpers. The only time students will not be permitted outside is during electrical storms. If the trip is cancelled due to snow days, time has been allotted at the end of each term for re-scheduling. D:\116105498.doc Page 1 of 1
