ESPAÑOL UNO - REGULAR VERBS
There are three types of INFINITIVE verbs in Spanish: 1. Verbs that end in “AR” like Hablar. 2.
Verbs that end in “ER” like comer. 3. Verbs that end in “IR” like vivir.
Most verbs in Spanish are easy to put into sentences because they all follow some very simple rules or
patterns. These verbs are called REGULAR VERBS.
A few verbs in Spanish do not follow the rules, so you have to memorize them separately. These verbs are
called IRREGULAR VERBS. We have already learned four of these irregular verbs. Remember, SER,
ESTAR, TENER, AND IR .
All verbs have FIVE different forms OR conjugations depending on WHO is doing the action in the
sentence. In order to know the right form or conjugation to use, you have to know WHO the subject of the
sentence is. Once you know that, the verb is easy to change.
Today, we are going to talk only about –AR ending verbs.
This is how you change the REGULAR verbs. First, you ALWAYS cut off the last two letters of the verb.
What you are left with is the stem or root.
If those last two letters are “AR”, then you add



“O” for the yo (I) form
“AS” for the tu (you) form
“A” for the el,or ella or Ud.
( he, she, you formal or it) form
-o
●“AMOS” for the nosotros (we) form
●“AN” for the ellos, ellas, Uds (they or all
you guys) form.
-amos
-as
-a
-an
