The international tire manufacturer, automotive supplier, and industrial partner Continental inaugurated today the solar photovoltaic power station project at its tire plant in Hefei, China. The ceremony was opened officially by Stephan Weil, Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Germany, representatives of the local government as well as Dr. Ralf Cramer, Member of the Executive Board of Continental and CEO of Continental China and Michael Egner, General Manager of the Continental location in Hefei. The energy saving project was started by Continental in cooperation with HeFei SuMeiDa Sungrow Power Co., Ltd to generate solar photovoltaic power by leveraging the roofs of the tire plant in Hefei, China. “The year 2014 marks the 30th anniversary of the partnership between the An Hui Province, China and the Lower Saxony State, in Germany, a long and beneficial cooperation between our states especially in the economic area. Therefore I’m glad to see the German enterprises, like Continental, present here in China respond to the local government’s call for contributing to its efforts in increasing the environmental protection” declared Mr. Stephan Weil. “With the pioneering solar photovoltaic power station initiative at the tire manufacturing facility in Hefei, Continental shows again its commitment to saving energy not only with eco-friendly products, but also in the daily operations”, highlighted Dr. Ralf Cramer. The solar power station will provide part of the electricity needed for the Hefei tire manufacturing operations in the future. On the roof of the Hefei plant, an area of around 70,000 m2 which equals 10 standard football fields is available for the installation of photovoltaic panels. Currently, the preliminary design of the project has been completed and both sides have jointly established the project teams. It is estimated that the solar photovoltaic power station will be combined to the grid and put into use by the end of 2014. “Continental’s various environmental indicators for its manufacturing operations in Hefei are on a leading position in the industry in China.
