Introduction
Many optical instruments rely entirely on combinations of converging and
diverging lenses. These lenses separately can create a wide variety of image types,
sizes, and orientations. In combination, they create an even wider and more useful
variety of images. Refracting telescopes and microscopes are examples of
instruments relying on these types of lenses.
In this lab we will explore image formation using a converging lens and a
diverging lens. In order to study the image formation of the diverging lens we will
have to use the converging lens in tandem with it since diverging lenses do not
produce real images (although we can still see them).
Procedure
Part I. Converging Lens (alone).

For object distances of 30.0, 20.0, 16.0, 14.0, 10.0, and 6.0 cm, record the
corresponding values of the image distance. In each case note whether the
image is magnified (M), diminished (D), upright (U), or inverted (I).

Part II. Converging Lens with Diverging Lens.

Place the diverging lens on a separate holder about 2 to 3 cm from the
converging lens. For object distances of 25.0, 30.0, and 35.0 cm, record the
corresponding image distances.
Analysis
Part I.
Make a table of object distance, image distance, focal length, magnification, and
orientation.
Calculate the focal length for the different positions.
Find the
average f.
Part II.
Calculate f’, the focal length of the diverging lens for each object distance.
