JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Senior EndoUrology Fellow Grade: CCT level or equivalent Accountable to: Urology Lead Clinician – Mr Mark Sullivan Director of Stone Service – Mr John Reynard Head of Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences – Prof F Hamdy Department: Urology, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust Employer: Urology, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust Background: The department seeks to appoint an Endourology Research Fellow (CCT level) who has an interest in all aspects of stone treatment, minimally invasive therapies and Endourology. The post will support the lithotripter service, which provides an elective and emergency lithotripsy service. This post will support the expansion of the endourology service, while providing the post-holder with an opportunity to have supervised clinical sub-speciality training and perform research related to the service. The post-holder will be closely cooperating with the other members of the Oxford Stone Group (www.nds.ox.ac.uk/osg) in delivering the stone service. The Urology department has 10 Consultants, 1 Senior Endourology Research Fellow (this post), 2 Clinical Lecturers (registrar level), four Specialty Registrars, 3 Core Trainees, an F2 and two F1s. In 2011 Oxford became accredited as a Urology Training Centre by the European Board of Urology (EBU) (http://www.ebu.com/certification-training/ebu-certified-centres). The Oxford Stone Group is the second in Europe to be recognized as a training centre of excellence for stone treatments by the European Board of Urology EBU. This fellowship is recognized and endorsed by the EBU. Principle activities: Clinical The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service. The duties of this post include: a) Working with the members of the Oxford Stone Group as part of a team to deliver the lithotripsy service. b) Independent operation of the lithotripter following comprehensive induction and training. c) Working with the Oxford Stone Group to deliver clinical services if and when required. d) Participate in a weekly specialized Stone Clinic. e) Participate in General Urology Clinics if required. f) Participate in morning ward rounds. g) Taking on a lead role in planning, projecting, conducting, and publishing of several research projects relevant to the service h) Being responsible in updating and actioning of the JJ stent register, BAUS endourology audits, lithotripsy database and PCNL audit. i) Ensuring up-to-date and accurate administrative and medical records as required, j) Supervision and teaching of junior doctors and nurses as required. k) Acting as a tutor for medical students and deliver clinical teaching related to general surgical topics as required. l) Maintain an accurate logbook of educational, research and clinical activities. Clinical Governance The post-holder will be required to participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. Infection Control Infection Control is everyone’s responsibility. All staff, both clinical and nonclinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts’ Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections including MRSA. All staff employed by the OUH have the following key responsibilities: Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact. Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust. Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health. Study, Training and Teaching Full training on the lithotripter will be provided. The postholder will be required to attend a Radiation Protection Course (IRMER) in the beginning of his tenure if not already certified. Research World-class research facilities are available in collaboration with the University of Oxford. Several existing collaborations exist in the fields of epidemiology, proteomics, metabolomics, public health, biomedical engineering (lithotripsy) and endourological research links exist with the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading. Dedicated academic time has been incorporated into the timetable. Salary and Conditions of Service Due to the nature of the work in this post, it is exempt from the provision of section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of offenders Act 1974, by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemption Order 1975). This post does not require an oncall commitment, however oncall may be available depending on the service needs. 15 days of paid study leave can be given at the discretion of the Director of Endourology & Stone Services under consideration of the requirements of the service. Funding may be available at discretion too. There will be 30 days of paid annual leave per annum. The post holder will have opportunities for further surgical exposure outside the Trust which may involve out-of hour’s activities on an ad-hoc basis.
