New America Media and the University of California Center Sacramento, Public Affairs
Journalism Program, are partnering for a sixth year to offer an education beat fellowship
program for ethnic media journalists in California, with funding support from the
California Education Policy Fund (CEPF) and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
This fellowship will be made up of two parts: 1) participation in a two-day training
program, and 2) the publication of a story about what it means to be an effective teacher,
the challenges to meeting that goal and the benefits to students.
Two-Day Training: The two days in Sacramento will be made up of a series of lectures,
discussions, and journalistic training related to education coverage. Issues to be
addressed include: national and state trends in measuring teacher effectiveness, the view
from the classroom, and methods for researching and interpreting data. Each fellow is
expected to bring a well thought out story idea to the fellowship training, and will use
these sessions to better develop their story plans.
Eight fellows will be chosen for the program. Former fellows are welcome to apply. New
America Media will cover two nights of hotel, travel expenses, as well as lunch for the
two-day fellowship training. Once the fellow has completed their story (and it has been
approved by NAM and their ethnic media outlet), and the story has been published, the
fellow will receive a $1,000 stipend.
Applications are due on Monday, Oct. 1. All application forms must be sent to Peter
Schurmann, NAM editor at pschurmann@newamericamedia.org. He can also be reached
by phone at 415-503-4170. You can also fax your application to 415-503-0970.
