GLASSWARE TECHNICIAN/HISTOLOGY LAB ASSISTANT – OBJECTIVE
Position Summary: This position is responsible for lab ware cleaning duties and waste
decontamination for the faculty, staff and students of the AHABS and SVM buildings, and reports to
the SVM Histology Supervisor. This position also provides lab assistance in Histology at the SVM.
Services provided include: (Glassware Technician) Decontaminating and disposing of biological
materials, stocking and issuing general laboratory supplies, coordinating maintenance of laboratory
equipment, providing ice and highly purified water, autoclaving, chemical preparation, and glassware
cleaning to precise protocol standards. (Histology Lab Assistant) Labeling, coverslipping, and filing
slides, equipment reagent maintenance, specimen receiving, supply inventory. This position will rotate
through both the AHABS and SVM glass wash facilities, and the SVM Histology lab; according to the
workload and staffing levels at each facility.
30% A. Process lab ware as needed at each facility.
A1. Work with faculty, staff and students to ensure services provided are consistent with
current established protocols.
A2. Be a resource to all staff and students re: proper submission of lab ware and biological
waste, maintaining high quality for all services provided by the laboratory.
A3. Troubleshoot and resolve problems that may arise with quality and quantity of services
provided.
A4. Monitor access to sensitive areas, e.g., handling and decontamination of biological
materials and storage of chemicals.
A5. Autoclave glassware for decontamination of biological agents.
A6. Separate glassware for specialized cleaning protocols.
A7. Wash glassware and rinse in deionized water.
A8. Package and sterilize clean glassware.
A09. Issue glassware to researchers (SVM)
A10. Clean and process glass pipettes and pipette containers for research
laboratory use
according to established protocols.
10% B. Process biological waste as needed at each facility.
B1. Autoclave trash bags.
B2. Put autoclaved waste to outside garbage bin
B3. Clean out decon autoclaves as necessary

C. Prepare and maintain stocks of disinfectant solutions for research laboratory use.
15% D. Maintain equipment.
D1. Perform routine maintenance and QC procedures on autoclaves, sterilizing oven, pipette
plugger, and glassware washing machines as indicated. Contact appropriate personnel
for maintenance and repair issues.
D2. Contact and schedule specific internal or external maintenance repair people when
highly-defined technical repairs are required.
10% E. Maintain inventory of commonly used research laboratory supplies.
E1. Maintain inventory of commonly used items and reorder supplies.
E2. Control access and issue supplies to users on request.

Train and direct student and LTE helpers working in the AHABS facility for times when
incumbent is not available.
F1. Direct staff on proper procedures in autoclaving, disinfecting and disposing of
contaminated biological materials.
F2. Train staff on proper procedures and protocols for cleaning laboratory glassware.
20% G. Histology Lab Assistant Duties
G1. Generate labels and label slides

Knowledge and Skills:
1. Knowledge of general laboratory procedures, glass handling, autoclaving.
2. Knowledge of preparing simple laboratory solutions.
3. Safety practices and procedures related to safety, i.e. biohazards and chemical materials.
4. General computer and word processing skills.
