It’s designed to help you know how many syllables appear in a word, which syllables get emphasis (accent), and what sounds each letter should make. The best way to learn to pronounce a new word is probably to ask an adult to pronounce it for you or to play an audio file . Phonetic code is becoming increasing outdated or anachronistic! as technology replaces it. That said, you should copy the phonetic code onto the front of your flash cards so you at least know which word you’re studying, without giving away its spelling. Phonetic codes vary from source to source, from dictionary to dictionary. Nonetheless, here are some common symbols and examples to show you the sounds they should make.
