Guidance on Observation A large proportion of the skills and knowledge criteria for ABC qualifications can be assessed through observation of the learners in performance of a practical task. This template is designed to record evidence that has been demonstrated by an activity, performance, behaviour or other observable activity. When carrying out observations consideration should be given to the following points: Learners should be informed at the start of their programme of the intention to carry out assessments of this nature, when such observations will be made and for which units or learning outcomes of the qualification. This should be linked to the agreed assessment plan. Observations should be unobtrusive and carried out during the course of normal work or a planned assessment. It is essential that correct PPE is worn by the learner during the observation (where appropriate). Persons carrying out the observations should familiarise themselves with the required criteria prior to the assessment. Feedback should be given to learners on their performance through a regular reviewing procedure. This system will be of value in determining the future training / learning needs of the learner. Achievements should be recorded promptly on appropriate documentation. Comments made to learners on their performance should always be constructive. Assessors may wish to clarify a learner’s understanding by asking questions. Guidance on oral questioning can be found below and details of any questions documented on the template above. Guidance on oral questioning All aspects of related knowledge that cannot be assessed through observation of practical work or need clarification of understanding may be assessed through formal oral questioning techniques. Points to be considered when questioning learners include: Questions should be related to the practical tasks currently being undertaken by the learner Questions should be open (not requiring an answer of yes or no) to gain the maximum amount of information from the learner The same questions should not be repeated in the course of one assessment session. Questions on the same subject can be asked after a reasonable amount of time has elapsed and further training has been given It is important that questions are clearly understood by the learner; therefore it may be necessary either to rephrase them or ask further questions to obtain the required information Whenever oral questioning takes place the learners response must be recorded for audit purposes V2 Nov 2011 Page 4 of 4 106737894
