Microbial Cell Factories is the world leading, primary research journal fully focusing on Applied Microbiology. Featured article A new potential secretion pathway for recombinant proteins in Bacillus subtilis Due to the lack of an outer membrane, Bacillus subtilis is considered a desirable ‘cell factory’ for the secretion of recombinant proteins. However, bottlenecks in the classical pathway for the secretion of recombinant proteins limit its use on a wide scale. Wang et al. show that nonclassically secreted proteins can lead recombinant proteins to the culture medium, and thus nonclassical protein secretion pathways can be exploited as a novel secretion pathway for recombinant proteins. Supplements Microbial Cell Factories publishes selected collections of research articles, conference proceedings, reviews and reports as supplements, which are free to access online. All articles published in supplements are subject to peer review; meeting abstracts undergo review and selection by the conference. View all supplements. Message from the Editor-in-Chief Antonio Villaverde: "The Microbial Cell Factory concept is more alive than ever. Apart from the productiontransformation of conventional metabolites, proteins, fuels, drugs and food, microbial cells are shown to be excellent producers of biomaterials with important applications in emerging biomedical fields. The contribution of systems biology principles, metabolic and protein engineering and 'omic' technologies should permit the full exploitation of microbial cells, which is progressively achieved from such a combination of interdisciplinary approaches."
