The four settled in Four Mile Township.23 The little village of Wayne City is situated on the Air Line Railroad, in Section 13, Township 2 south, Range 5 east, and 18, Township 2 south, Range 6 east. It was laid out in 1881, by Hilliard, County Surveyor, and incorporated the following year. But a few years ago there was nothing here but two or three little log cabins, a blacksmith shop and an old saw mill. But in the short time since elapsed, it has taken a considerable boom, and grown to very promising proportions. It has general stores by J.B. Scudamore, who was her first merchant, and is the Postmaster; John Chandler, Augustus Smith and Reid Bros.; John Tyler, hardware; Charles Jacobson, drugs; harness and furniture, L. Knowles; City Hotel; and Drs. Garrison, Bristow and Branson. The village supports were excellent graded schools, with able teachers in the Misses Branson and Staton. A fine merchant flouring mill was erected here in 1882, by Robert Ellis, and does a thriving business. Wayne City Lodge I.O.O.F. was organized in 1875, and was moved to the village in 1881. It has a membership of about thirty. The following are the first and present village officers: Board of Trustees, J.B. Scudamore, President, C.R. Ellis, J.R. Chandler, J.M. McRill, E.B. Reid and L. Merritt; Police Magistrate, A.R. Robinson; Village Clerk, Dr. B.E. Garrison; Marshal, A.C. Boswell; Street Commissioner, George Hollinger. Middleton, a small town, situated on Section 5, Township 3 south, Range 5 east, was laid off in 1854 by William Whitacre, County Surveyor. It has not grown much in size since the first, as it has never had the advantages of any railroad facilities. The post office at this point is called Long Prairie post office, and mails come by way of Keen Station on the Air Line. Middleton had a Masonic Lodge organized there before the late war, but it was afterward moved to Bell Rive, Jefferson Co., Ill. Asbury Lodge, No. 248, I.O.O.F., was organized about 1854, and is [p. 250] in a prosperous condition. In 1861, the Methodists built a church at this place, but it was subsequently torn down and a more substantial one erected at a cost of $1,300. It is situated on Section 9, near the Farnsworth Graveyard, one mile southeast of the town. The first doctor to locate in Middleton, was Daniel Wingate, and he represented this district under the "Five Horse Act." Keen Station is a small town situated on the Air Line three miles west of Wayne City, and consists of two general stores, and one grocery. It has a good school, and a substantial church building is being erected by the Missionary Baptists. A grist mill was put up there in 1881, and there are also two saw mills at this place. The vast benefits to be derived from schools were not overlooked by the old settlers of Four Mile Township. Schools claimed their attention next to that of their families and their immediate wants. There were many little log cabins put up here and there over the township very early, but the exact location and the names of their first teachers could not be ascertained. An early school was kept on Frog Island by Thomas Gibbs, but we could learn no further details regarding it. Another one was situated in Long Prairie, on the land of Richard Jenkins, and this was used for religious purposes also. The following items represent approximately the status of the schools of Four Mile at the present writing: Number of pupils enrolled, 750; number of school buildings, 11; number of teachers employed, 21; average pay of same, males, $30 per month; females, $25. Estimated value of school property, $10,000. Page 3 ___________________________________________________________________________ [p. 251] The last bear killed in the county was killed in 1877 in this township. A man by the name of Jones was the slayer, and the bear, which was a black one, weighed after being dressed, 450 pounds, including the hide. The bear had probably taken a notion to tramp, and had wandered up here from the South.24 LISTEN TO THE STORY OF JOEL LATHROP, WAYNE CITY, by John F. Temple If you really wanted to know what life was like in Southern Illinois nearly 100 years ago you couldn't have done better than ask old Joel Lathrop, who died Jan. 13 in Fairfield Memorial Hospital. Mr. Lathrop was 98, was born in Lawrence County near Sumner on Aug. 1, 1859, and lived most of his life near Wayne City. Of course there wasn't much of a town there when young Mr. Lathrop moved into the area in 1881. The big town outside Fairfield was Middleton near Scrub Hill which was southewest [sic] of Wayne City SCRUB HILL was--and is--about the highest spot in the vicinity and and [sic] in those days it had an old log school and a log church, both of which have long since disappeared. The people used to come for miles around to vote at the school, Mr. Lathrop recalled. They'd come in wagons and the routes they took through the woods and fields radiated out from the school like the spokes of a whell and some are visible today. Mr. Lathrop was a farmer from his boyhood days and loved the life. He was the father of 11 children all living at the time of his death, and the other evening just before closing time, Albert Lathrop, one of the sons, dropped in at THE RECORD office and we talked about his father and the life that our Wayne County people lived in those days. IT WAS a good life, too, with time for friendliness and neighborly help and some of that same friendliness and helpfulness remains today to make this ocunty a most desireable and happy place in which to live. But let's start at the beginning, in Lawrence County. Joel was only six when the Civil War ended and his father and two brothers came marching and singing home. Yes, singing. It was the custom in that area and may have been in others for all Joel knew, for returning soldiers to come swinging down the country roads to home, singing to let the folks know they were on the way. 'Naturally there were no phones in those days' Albert Lathrop pointed out. 'The singing spread the news from house to house along the countryside. 'My father insists he remembers clearly the return of his brothers, one one night, the other the following night.' JOEL HIMSELF, as he grew older, must have been more than ordinarily adventuresome. When he was 18 he and three other boys went west for the summer. They didn't go to stay. They were, you might well say, tourists. They traveled by wagon through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. This was in 1877, in the days when Wayne County's 'Bat' Masterson was making a reputation for himself as Dodge City deputy, Ford county sheriff, gambler, prankster and buffalo hunter. That was the year, also that Wyatt Earp returned to Dodge and continued building his reputation as a gun fighter and deacon in the Rev. Wright's Union church. Albert Lathrop didn't know whether his adventuresome father hit rip-roaring Dodge City on that summer trip, but he may well have done so. THEY SAW plenty of Indians but the wars had gone against them and they kept their heads down as they and their wives and children moved silently away from the young Illinois travelers. There was no shortage of food. Joel, using muzzle-loading shotgun, kept the group well supplied with game, and they slept under the stars or under the wagon, depending on the weather. Oh, they had a fine time. But Joel liked Illinois better and returned to spend his life here. IN 1881 he moved to the Scrub Hill vicinity. He already had a couple of brothers near what is now Oak Grove School and he came to see them several times, usually in a wagon but once in a buggy. That was the fastest. It required only two days and one night. Young Joel remembered that 1881 was one of the driest years in Illinois's history. Few crops were raised. The Southern Railroad was abuilding and, Joel said, that may have kept hundreds, even thousands of people from starving. The men worked on the railroad and rented their horses to help build the grades. The Scrub Hill area was loaded with fine white oak timber and during this period much of the land was cleared and the trees hewed into railroad ties. Page 4 ___________________________________________________________________________ THERE WAS hard work and there was fun. Election days were lively events. The men climbed aboard their wagons and clattered and creaked their way to Scrub Hill where a politician would give you your ballot and a bottle of whiskey if you wanted it. Then he'd watch you vote and after you'd marked your ballot properly you'd hand it in at a school window. Very democratic. No secrets. For all the whiskey handed out, Joel couldn't seem to recall any particular fights or disturbances. BUT JOEL LATHROP was a family man. He and his wife, who died in 1946, had not only 11 children but 28 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Of course life was much different then. There was a mill north of Wayne City on Skillet Fork where people for miles around went to get their grain ground. Farmers lived almost entirely off the land. They raised enough wheat to supply their flour needs, and enough corn to have ground into meal. THEY ALL raised plenty of sorghum and a good farmer wouldn't think of starting the winter without at least two or three kegs of molasses. The Lathrops usually had one barrel and a couple of kegs. 'We used it not only for syrup but also as sugar,' Albert Lathrop recalled. 'We didn't raise crops to sell. We raised them to live on. 'Until maybe 15 years ago my father would bury potatoes and apples and they'd last all winter. 'When the family was growing up we'd bury two wagonloads of potatoes. I'd help my father. We'd put down a layer of straw, cover this with potatoes, then another layer of straw, and finally about a foot or more of dirt. Then we'd dig a trench around the whole thing to drain away the water. 'That was called banking or holing the potatoes. Usually we'd have enough seed for planting in the spring.' 'THEN WE'D always have plenty of pumpkins and squash and soup beans and plenty of meat.' 'You didn't buy meat, of course. It was home killed. And we did a lot of hunting. Rabbit, squirrel and quail were plentiful. 'Father and my older brother did most of the family hunting, using a double-barrelled muzzle-loading shotgun. It was sport all right but it's main purpose was to support the family with food.' IN THOSE DAYS the church and the school--they usually occupied the same building--were the center of community life. Any preacher could have the use of the school for church services just for the asking and long and loud were the sermons. Joel Lathrop and his growing family lived a quarter-mile from the school and frequently they could hear a preacher roaring out his sermon, the sound rolling sweetly over the fields. A preacher was judged in part by the loudness of his sermon and in part by its length. PARTIES particularly in the quiet winter months, were common. They'd be held at the school or at someone's home and usually there was popcorn with melted sorghum poured over it, or taffy also made with sorghum. Remember? Ever since Albert could remember his father had tried to go to bed about 8 and be up about 4. In his later years though, he went to bed a little earlier and got up a little later, perhaps around 5 a.m. He attributed his long life to the regular hours he kept and to the fact that he neither drank nor smoked. HE WAS a man unafraid to do and say what he thought was right, and he would tell his children: 'It's what you do and how you live that counts; not what you say.' He was a good checker player, hard to beat. His sons would sometimes slip an extra checker on the board--sometimes two or three and he'd still beat them. He was the kind of man who did much to help make Wayne County what it is today and without such as he and his family we newcomers wouldn't be so anxious to make this our home. We owe such men a great debt. [Ed. note: This article should be taken with a grain of salt. The author writes as though he actually spoke with Joel Lathrop. In the first paragraph he does state that Joel died Jan. 13, before this article was written. These memories are actually those of Albert Lathrop, of things Joel told him and things Albert remembered from growing up. Memories that had the help of a newspaperman. It is a great story and a great treasure for the family, but few of the dates should be considered absolute fact at this time. Joel's father did not serve in the Civil War as stated in the eighth paragraph. The quote from Albert in the eleventh paragraph is more accurate as both Joel's brothers Thomas and Ezra did participate in the Civil War.] .25 Page 5 ___________________________________________________________________________ , , Louisa Miranda Dove was born on 8 Jul 1878 in Wayne Co., IL.26 27 28 She died on 15 Mar 1946 in home, Four Mile Twp., Wayne Co., IL at age 67; MRS. Affidavit of Witness, Jan. 1940, Olef Shreve, for the plaintiff, traveled 14 miles from Wayne City, IL. Complaint for divorce, custody of child and alimony. Plaintiff for cause of action against defendant, alleges: 1. That she is an actual resident of the County of Wayne and is now and has been an actual resident of the State of Illinois for five years last past, that on the 16th day of June, A.D. 1937 she was lawfully married to the defendant, Bernard Lathrop, and as the issue of such marriage one child, George Harrison Lathrop, was born on July 3, 1938, and is now in the care and custody of plaintiff. And that she has always, since her marriage with defendant, behaved herself toward him as a chaste, dutiful and affectionate wife. 2. That the said defendant, Bernard Lathrop, disregarding his marriage vows, has ever since said marriage been guilty of extreme and repeated cruelty toward the plaintiff, that he has used toward plaintiff on many occasions obscene and abusive language, particularly so during times when he was intoxicated, and on several occasions has used personal violence toward her; and particularly so during times when he was intoxicated, and on several occasions has used personal violence toward her; and particularly, on or about November, 1937 at their home in Rochelle, Illinois, where he was then working, he shoved her and slammed a door on her foot, and greatly injured her; and again in February, 1938 near Wayne City, Illinois he shoved her out of a car and cursed and abused her; and on another occasion in 1938 when she was pregnant, he cursed and abused her, and attacked the plaintiff and grabbed her about the waist and squeezed her so severely that it caused her to be ruptured, and she had to be treated by a physician. And on each occasion and on many other occasions he has used obscene and abusive language, and particularly so during times when he was intoxicated. 3. The plaintiff alleges that the defendant, Bernard Lathrop, wholly regardless of his obligations as a husband, directly after they were married, began the excessive use of intoxicating liquors, and continued to use intoxicating liquors, and was guilty of habitual drunkenness during the time of said marriage, so much that on some occasions he was wholly unfit to Page 20 ___________________________________________________________________________ attend to his usual occupation and business during that period, and while so intoxicated he was quarrelsome and abusive to his family, using vile epithets, rendering plaintiff's condition intolerable. 4. Plaintiff further states that on account of the cruelty and abusive language of the defendant she was compelled to leave him and go to the home of her father, where she has since resided; and that during the time in which they lived and cohabited together, defendant failed to properly provide for plaintiff and furnish her a home. That the said defendant is an able bodied man and is able to earn a fair salary and contribute to the support of herself and said child. 5. Wherefore, plaintiff prays that she may be divorced and freed from the bonds of matrimony now existing between her and the said defendant, Bernard Lathrop, and that the care, custody and education of their said child, George Harrison Lathrop, be awarded to the plaintiff; that the Court decree that the defendant pay to the plaintiff such sums of money as the Court may deem necesary for the proper maintenance of plaintiff and the said child, and that plaintiff may have such other and further relief in the premises as equity may require and to the Court shall seem meet. [signed] Mary E. Lathrop By H.J. Burgess, Attorney for Plaintiff. Answer of Defendant and Cross Bill, Now comes the defendant, Bernard Lathrop, by his Attorneys, Feiger and Brown, and for answer to the complaint for divorce in the above entitled cause, respectfully shows the Court as follows: 1. Admits that the complainant herein is an actual resident of Illinois, and has been for five years last past, that on the 16th day of June, A.D. 1937, she was lawfully married to the defendant, that there was born on July 3, 1938, as the issue of said marriage, one child, a boy named George Harrison Lathrop, who is now in the care and custody of the plaintiff; but denies that the complainant herein, since her marriage with the defendant, has behaved herself toward him as a chaste, dutiful and affectionate wife, and avers that since their marriage, the said plaintiff has been quarrelsome and ill-tempered, has refused the performance of her wifely duties in every respect, to the point of leaving the bed and board of the defendant without any cause. 2. Denies that he has ever been guilty of extreme or repeated cruelty toward the plaintiff, denies that he has used on any occasion obscene and abusive language, denies that he was ever intoxicated during the time they lived together, and denies that he has ever used personal violence toward her; in particular denies that on or about November, 1937, at their home in Rochelle, Illinois, where he was then working, he shoved her or slammed the door on her foot or injured her, and avers that they did not even live in Rochelle at that time, but were living at the home of the sister of the defendant in Paxton, Illinois, living at said sister's home from sometime in October until sometime in December of that year, 1938; particularly denies further that in February, 1938, near Wayne City, Illinois, he shoved her out of a car or cursed or abused her in any way; in particular denies that on some other occasion in 1938, when she was pregnant, that he cursed and abused her and attacked the plaintiff and grabbed her about the waist and squeezed her so severely that it caused her to be ruptured and further denies that on any occasion did he ever use obscene and abusive language or that he was ever intoxicated while living with the plaintiff herein. 3. Defendant, for answer to paragraph 3 of the complainant's bill for divorce, denies that he ever indulged in the excessive use of intoxicating liquors while living with the complainant herein, and denies further that he was ever unfit to attend his usual occupation due to the use of intoxicating liquors, and denies that he ever was quarrelsome or abusive or used vile epithets to render the plaintiff's condition intolerable. 4. Defendant denies that the plaintiff was compelled by any act of his to leave him and go to the home of her father; denies the plaintiff's allegation that he failed to provide properly for the plaintiff and furnish her a home. Admits that he is an able bodied man, and able to support the said child, but denies that he is able to support both mother and child outside his own home, and denies his liability for the support of the plaintiff herein, averring that she left his home without any cause. 5. Wherefore, defendant prays this Honorable Court that the relief prayed for in paragraph 5 of the complainant's bill for divorce herein, be denied entirely. By way of Cross Bill, the defendant herein alleges as follows: 1. That he is an actual resident of the County of Wayne and is now and has been an actual resident of the State of Illinois for five years last past, and for the year immediately preceeding his filing of this cross bill. 2. That on the 16th day of June, A.D. 1937 at Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, he was lawfully married to the complainant in the above entitled cause, Mary E. Lathrop. 3. That he has always since his marriage with the said Mary E. Lathrop, behaved himself toward her as a dutiful and an affectionate husband. 4. That on the 31st day of May, A.D. 1938, the said Mary E. Lathrop, without cause absented and deserted herself from the defendant in the above entitled cause, removing herself to the home of her father and mother, where she has ever since lived and from whence she has refused to leave; that after the desertion on the said 31st day of May, A.D. 1938, to Page 21 ___________________________________________________________________________ wit on the 3rd day of July, 1938, there was born to the said Mary E. Lathrop a boy named George Harrison Lathrop, which has ever since been in the care and custody of the said Mary E. Lathrop. 5. That the defendant herein has been contributing to the support of the said child at the rate of $7.50 per month. 6. Wherefore, the said Bernard Lathrop, by his attorneys, Feiger and Brown, prays that the bond of matrimony now existing between the said Bernard Lathrop and Mary E. Lathrop be dissolved, and that all rights and duties and privileges heretofore existing between the parties hereto by reason of the said marriage bond be declared null and void; that the care, custody, and education of their said child, George Harrison Lathrop, be awarded to the said Bernard Lathrop; that the Court decree that the costs herein be paid by the said Mary E. Lathrop, and that the said Bernard Lathrop may have such other and further relief in the premises as equity may require and as to the Court shall seem meet. SHREVE were divorced 25 Jan 1940 in Circuit Court, Fairfield, Wayne Co., IL. Decree for Divorce, Alimony and Custody of Child, No. 39-2075. Now on this 2nd day of October, A.D. 1939, being one of the regular judicial days of the present term of this Court, comes the defendant, Bernard Lathrop, by his attorneys, Feiger and Brown, and files answer to the complaint, and files counter-claim asking affirmative relief. And now on this 25th day of January, A.D. 1940 it appearing to the Court that the plaintiff heretofore on the 22nd day of September, A.D. 1939 filed her bill of complaint against the defendant, Bernard Lathrop; and the Clerk of this Court issued a summons therein on said date, under the seal of this Court, signed with his name and dated the 22nd day of September, A.D. 1939, returnable on the return day designated by the plaintiff, viz: on the Third Monday in the month of October, A.D. 1939 and on the first Monday in the month of November, A.D. 1939, which dates were not less than twenty nor more than sixty days after the date of summons. And this cause coming on to be heard upon the complaint herein, and the defendant having been duly served with process of summons in this cause twenty days prior to the first return day named therein, same being the Third Monday in October, A.D. 1939, and the cause coming on for trial and the complainant and the defendant in Court, and the complaint of Mary E. Lathrop dismissed for want of equity, and the Court having heard the oral testimony of witnesses sworn and examined in open Court and being fully advised in the premises, on consideration thereof doth find: That the Court has jurisdiction of the subject matter and the parties to this cause, and that the complainant, Mary E. Lathrop, is a resident of Wayne County, and is now and has been for more than five years last past prior to the filing of the bill in this cause a resident of the State of Illinois, and that on the 16th day of June, A.D. 1937 she was lawfully married to Bernard Lathrop, the defendant herein, and that the said defendant is a resident of Wayne County, Illinois and has been for more than one year last past. And that as a result of this marriage one child has been born, namely: George Harrison Lathrop, now about two years old, and is now in the care and custody of the plaintiff herein. The Court further finds that the equities in this cause are with Bernard Lathrop, the plaintiff in the cross-complaint, as therein set forth in his cross-complaint, and plaintiff in the cross-complaint, Bernard Lathrop, lived and cohabited with the said Mary E. Lathrop, defendant in the cross-complaint, as her husband until she wilfully deserted the plaintiff in the crosscomplaint and absented herself from him without any reasonable cause for the space of one year and upwards before the filing of the bill in this cause, and has and does persist in such desertion, and yet continues to absent herself from the plaintiff in the cross-complaint. It is therefore ordered, adjudged and decreed by the Court that the marriage between the plaintiff in the cross-complaint, Bernard Lathrop, and the defendant in the cross-complaint, Mary E. Lathrop, be dissolved and the same is hereby dissolved accordingly, and the parties are and each of them is freed form the obligations thereof; and that the defendant in the cross-complaint, Mary E. Lathrop, be given the care, custody and control of the minor child, George Harrison Lathrop, without any interference from the plaintiff in the cross-complaint, Bernard Lathrop. It is further ordered that Bernard Lathrop, plaintiff in the cross-complaint, is ordered to pay to the Clerk of this Court for the use of defendant in the crosscomplaint for the support of their minor child the sum of $5.00 per month, the first payment to be made on the 25th day of January, A.D. 1940, and on the 25th day of each month thereafter until the further order of this Court. Zion Farnsworth Cemetery, Wayne Co., IL;243 244 his estate was probated 30 Mar 1984 in Probate Court, Fairfield, Wayne Co., IL.245 Bernard and Zella lived down the road from my house when I was growing up. I practically lived there in the summers and they were more or less my grandparents after grandpa Albert died and grandma Grace moved away. They always had a huge garden of green beans, tomatos, sweet corn, cucumbers, potatos, etc. Every summer he planted a separate watermelon and muskmelon patch. They also had an orchard and we would pick cherries, plums, apples and peaches. Zella liked to experiment with new plants. I remember one year she raised egg plant. I had never seen an egg plant before. Bernard was pretty much self-sufficient as a farmer. He raised beef cattle and always kept at least one milk cow. He and Zella raised chickens and sold the eggs. He hunted raccoon, rabbit and squirrel in season. He always had coon dogs, Pete, Poncho, Joe and Mollie. They both fished most of the summer. Zella always kept a calendar that told when the best fishing days were. They went to town once a week and bought maybe $10.00 worth of groceries, never more than $20.00. Zella grew up in East St. Louis. She used to tell me stories about her father going to the movies alone and bringing home a big bucket of popcorn for the kids. She and her sisters used to play guitars and sing on KMOX in St. Louis. She sang to me and taught me "Mare's Eat Oats." She raised cocker spaniels before she married Bernard. Bernard was a mean card player. He had taught me to play rummy by the time I was 5. He was easy on me until I beat him, from then on it was every man for himself. At family gatherings there was always a game of pinochle going, it was the Page 23 ___________________________________________________________________________ men's game. Bernard and Zella spent lots of winter nights at our house or us at theirs playing cards. New Year's Eve was always spent playing cards and watching Guy Lombardo on TV.
