Punch List, Chemistry Lecture Hall Renovation Project
24 January 2002 7 January 2002
3 January 2002
The three Chemistry lecture halls have been extensively renovated and the audio-visual systems completely reinstalled and updated. Substantial improvement in the functionality and attractiveness of the halls has resulted.
We realize that some of the work is not yet complete, but it also appears that some of the work has been
neglected or overlooked. Therefore the Renovations Committee decided it was appropriate to create a Punch
List of as many incomplete renovation tasks as we could identify in 50 minutes, to create a report on these, and
to submit that report to the appropriate people, all in order to ensure the Lecture Halls are complete in every
respect, in time for the start of the Spring semester. On 21 Nov 01, we will post this where all Chemistry
faculty members can read it and solicit their contributions. We will update the above Draft Number whenever
we update the report. Any of us would be happy to elaborate on any of the items in the list.

Needed for all boards in

These urgently need to be
fixed. Some lecturers are
too short to move the
boards by hand and thus
rely on the motors.

1-24, 4:18 pm; JJG left voice mail for MM.
1-25, 8:15am; MM called: Chalkboard manufacturer has submitted a plan of action to MM, he will review it with the architect today, then have the
manufacturer "repair" CSC-12. If that is ok, then other rooms will be similar fixed. Repairs include speed, noise, missing trim and ledges.
2-1, 11:30 am; phone conversation with MM: Architect has approved "retrofit" plan; letter written to "Polyvision" requesting room 12 be fixed – FM
will then either approve such changes for the rest of the rooms, or request a complete replacement. No schedule yet set.
2-7: Phone call from MM: Chem needs to approve (or not) the one retrofitted board in CSC-12.
2-8: Polled a variety of faculty regarding the one retrofitted board in CSC-12, consensus is that it is a dramatic improvement over the previous
version BUT it is still two slow (at least double the speed from about 11 seconds to move position to about 5 seconds), AND the switches are wrong
(you should toggle up, to move a board up, and toggle down to move a board down, there should be a three position switch – up will move the board
up without holding the switch, middle will stop the board at any point, down will move the board to the complete down position AND the labels on
the switches are wrong – replace "view" and "nonview" with "up" and "down".)
2-8: Expected MM to visit Fri afternoon – no show.
2-11: Expected MM to visit Monday early am – no show.

2-11: Met MM around noonish (?): (1) Boards discussed as noted above. He will continue to strive for the improvements; the "speed" issue is likely
to be most difficult to accomplish.
2-22: Still only one/third of the boards in 12 have been changed (change not considered adequate). Sent email to MM requesting status update.

1-24: E-mail to Patty: Where should the one eraser cleaner be kept? Or should we have one for each lecture hall? It seems silly to me, to buy
"three". I think we should mount the one eraser cleaner, in some "publically accessible" area near the lecture halls, in such a way that it can be used
by anyone at anytime. Ideas?
1-25; E-mail from Patty: The kitchen by 12B might be a good place. I believe that door is usually left unlocked and that should be far enough away
from 12B to eliminate the noise problem. There is a small refrigerator in there so we know it would be easy to access wiring.
2/8: Conversation with PP and reflecting the fact that erasers are being "clapped" on the new wood slats in CSC-12A; lets just install an eraser
cleaner in each of the three wet chem benches.
2/11: PP – two more eraser cleaners yet to be ordered.
2/22: PP – two additional eraser cleaners not yet to hand.

E-mail to Ed, 1/16: Can you take a picture of a periodic table, like the one attached, saved as screen capture from this web site:
http://pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/default.htm, and set it up so that it is the default image displayed when the projector is turned on and no input
is provided? Or maybe set it so one of the "input selection" buttons just shows this one image?
1/30-31: JJG and TC exchanged e-mails and images – TC will implement the image change.
2/11: Conversation with MM. chairs/railings discussed. Bottom line is that MM will recommend 20 additiona chairs be installed in CSC-12 and 10
additional chairs each in 12A and 12B. These chairs will obviate the need for railings. The extra chairs will be extremely beneficial for exam taking
as well as improving the safety.

faces the student seats? I'm sure there is electrical power in the media closet that can be "tapped" into. Can you consider this and let me know if it
can be accomplished, and if yes, about when it might be done. One "complication" is that CIDDE "owns" the media closets, so we might need their

Is it possible for the wireless microphone sound to be taped to the audio cassette system in the
electronics rack? This feature would be nice as it would allow us to record our named lectureships.
Alternatively, we could use the Chemistry department’s wireless mic/transmitter system, have the
lecture where two mics, and record on the installed equipment using the electronics rack “inputs”.
