CIOs and Radiologists Speak Out: Speech Recognition a ‘Must-Have’
Intensifying Regulatory and Reimbursement Pressures Drive Adoption of Speech
Recognition
BURLINGTON, Mass., – November 19, 2012 – Nuance Communications, Inc. today
announced growing momentum for its voice-enabled radiology solution, Powerscribe 360 |
Reporting. Decreasing reimbursement and the shift toward accountable care are changing the
role of radiology. As a result, radiologists are turning to Nuance to improve reporting efficiency
and more directly demonstrate their impact on patient care. Moreover, recent commentary in The
Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR) further reinforces the need for
technologies, like speech recognition, that enable radiologists to document and deliver reliable,
actionable clinical data that can save valuable time downstream for clinicians and hospital
providers.
“Like all specialties, radiologists are looking for ways to demonstrate their direct impact on
patient care in the evolving healthcare model,” said Janet Dillione, executive vice president and
general manager, Nuance Healthcare. “Nuance’s voice-enabled radiology reporting platform
helps radiologists streamline the capture and transfer of accurate, actionable patient information
to referring physicians and does so by seamlessly integrating with established imaging
technologies and incorporating key data into the patient report – like radiation dose.”
This month, approximately 30 healthcare provider organizations are expected to go-live and/or
upgrade on the Powerscribe 360 platform. In addition, a plethora of new organizations have
recently been added as Nuance customers. The following is insight from C-suite executives and
radiologists who recently selected Nuance:

Poudre Valley Health System (PVHS) – In October, PVHS went live with PowerScribe
360 | Reporting to support the documentation and workflow needs of their 28 radiologists
and the more than 25,500 reports they produce each month. PVHS knew they needed to
adapt to industry changes and that it was imperative to find a way to decrease costs and
improve report turnaround time in order to enable their radiologist group to provide
enhanced quality service to the patients and physicians they serve throughout Northern
Colorado. Already, PVHS has realized a return on their investment with radiologists
reaching a 98 percent or above self-edit rate less than a month since adopting Nuance.
“Nuance has impacted my work-life balance. The streamlined workflow their solution
provides allows me to know that at the end of the day, I don’t have to get back online that
night to sign-off on additional reports – that’s a relief,” said Sarah Jess, MD, Advanced
Medical Imaging Consultants at Poudre Valley Health System.
Earlier this year, PVHS partnered with the University of Colorado Hospital to form University of
Colorado Health and also recently added Memorial Health System. They
will deploy PowerScribe 360 | Reporting on all three campuses over the next year.

Meadville Medical Center – According to Michael Martz, chief information officer at
Meadville Medical Center in Pennsylvania, they are a progressive organization when it
comes to the adoption of health IT. In fact, they’re already in the process of moving
towards Meaningful Use Stage 2. “We chose Nuance because they are widely recognized
as having the broadest capabilities, particularly when it comes fulfilling our radiologists
‘need for speed’ through the self-editing of reports,” said Martz. “We’re excited about
integrating Nuance into our workflow and confident it will transform radiology report
turnaround time from hours to mere minutes.”

Atlantic Health System – One of the largest non-profit hospital organizations in New
Jersey, Atlantic Health System recently adopted Nuance technology to streamline
radiology workflow. “The key features that make Nuance prominent are its accuracy,
template capabilities that ensure consistent reports, and the ability to interrupt workflow
and temporarily switch to a pressing patient report without missing a beat. In the past,
our radiologists struggled with this and often had to take additional time to ensure they
did not start dictating against the wrong patient report as a result of interruptions,” said
Linda Reed, vice president and chief information officer at Atlantic Health System.

Radiology Consultants of Iowa (RCI) – “Nuance offers best-in-class speech recognition
accuracy,” said Joe Moore, chief information officer, Radiology Consultants of Iowa.
Since 2005, RCI has been using a non-Nuance speech recognition solution to serve more
than 14 hospitals. RCI is currently experiencing a period of growth and, as a result,
recently decided to reevaluate current IT investments and chose to enter a new
partnership with Nuance. “RCI provides reports for all of our facilities around the clock
so there’s no room for inefficiency or inaccuracy,” said John Floyd, MD and chair of the
RCI-IT Committee. “With Nuance’s easy-to-use, intuitive technology, our radiologists
will be more efficient as a result of improved accuracy and more efficient self-editing.”

Wake Radiology – A leading radiology practice based in North Carolina, Wake
Radiology recently selected Nuance to handle voice-enabled radiology reporting for their
19 outpatient imaging offices. “Our radiologists formed a user-group earlier this year to
evaluate a variety of speech recognition options,” said Ron Mitchell, chief information
officer at Wake Radiology. “Based on our team’s positive hands-on experience with
Nuance’s technology at one of our hospital partners, they easily beat out the
competition.”
Nuance will demonstrate their Powerscribe 360 portfolio at the Radiological Society of North
America’s (RSNA) 98th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago on November 2529 in booth #6217 South Hall. To learn more about how Nuance can help radiologists establish
