Kenya, India, and Mexico were showcased and celebrated by weaving into existing
events and programs.
Kenya:
 Family Fun Night: The Kenyan desserts, African tea, Kenyan table decorations (made by Tracy
Rose), African music for the cupcake walk, Kenyan bookmarks (prizes for the cupcake walk) and
“Christmas Around the World” small coloring books and colors (prizes for the cupcake walk) all
helped celebrate Kenya, Africa and even other Christmas traditions.
 Kenyan posters for library display: Continuing with our celebration and awareness-raising of
Kenya, Cybil created colorful posters for the library. Students were able to see/read pieces of
information about Kenya that were easily accessible to them, memorable and very interesting.
 Music diversity and integration of global music: Gina Madlom is integrating global music into her
curriculum. The students learned a Swahili song and performed at a school Mass.
Mexico:
 Several activities: Sean Wall presented at assembly on his experience in medicine in Latin
America, clothing collection for UMOS and the 16 Street Health Center, Mexican books for
library, book reading to class on “The Pot that Juan built”
 Morning prayer/recognition for Our Lady of Guadalupe: recognition of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a
very important feast day for Mexican, Spanish, Latin American Catholics around the world.
India:
 India Catholic schools presentation around Catholic Schools Week
 Bollywood Dance class offered for Fine Arts
 Music Song: “We shall overcome” in Hindi
 Hindi Script: Students learned how to write a word in Hindi
 An Indian Potluck was held after 4:30 mass for the community

Mindfulness & Centering Prayer experiences were brought to students, teachers, and
the community:


Advent Centering Prayer group: Jamie Lynn Tatera facilitated a Sunday evening Advent Centering
prayer group for Sundays of Advent for the community to experience
Mindfulness in our Faith pilot program with middle school, 1 graders

Other experiences:




January 20 Martin Luther King, Jr. Mass at St. Monica’s Holy Family students/ faculty/
chaperones are bussed to St. Monica’s to hear St. Francis’ Gospel choir sing during St. Monica’s
Tuesday Mass and participate in the celebration.
Teacher Appreciation lunches have had a global cuisines theme, and highlighted saints from
around the world to correspond with the food source
Supported Reception for Father Alex and knitwear sales from Alto Cayma
Stay Calm and Think Outside the Box – flyer of local events/ideas for adults and families to
broaden their horizons and try something new
