CONSERVATION CLUBS:
FROM KENYAN GRASSLANDS TO THE GARDEN STATE
Creating the Curriculum
• Key questions
– What is it that we want US students to learn?
• Common Core Standards
• Next Gen Science Standards
– How do we translate the Kenyan experience into a
lesson plan that’s accessible and applicable to US
students?
• Kenyan environment (landscape and ecosystem)
• Cultural and social concerns
Creating the Curriculum II
• Ways we connected Kenyan and US curriculum
– Emphasis on experiential learning
– Shared activities that could potentially lead to
further communication
(comparing/contrasting/sharing data)
• Magic Garden idea
• Creating ethograms for animals in both the United
States and Kenya (through live camera on mpalalive!)
Method
• Undergrad intern paired with a teacher
• Worked on one lesson together
• Independent work with group collaboration
and discussion each week
Reflection
• Navigating through standards – reading and
applying them
• Learned an important aspect of teaching
– Creating a “roadmap” before beginning a lesson –
always having objectives in mind
– Being able to measure (through assessments)
what students have learned
– Experiential learning
– Student engagement
