PhD studentship (full time, 3 years) “Toxicological Studies of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Dental Patients” Ref: PCMD/GS/0026R3 This Studentship is based in Plymouth The Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry with its parent Institutions, the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, are seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability to join their exciting and rapidly expanding programme of internationally rated research. As part of our new developments and our commitment to research excellence, applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates, 2:1 or above, for a PhD studentship. International students must also have IELTS [International English Language Testing System] score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification). Plasticisers (e.g. Di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)) and some dental composite breakdown materials (e.g. bisphenol A) are known endocrine disrupters in laboratory animals. Descriptive studies have identified potentially supra-normal concentrations of these individual agents in children, critical care populations and dental patients. This studentship aims to investigate the baseline and post-treatment urine and saliva concentrations of Bisphenol A and phthalate plasticisers in paediatric and adult patient populations entering Peninsula Dental School (PDS) Clinics. The post will involve chromatographic (LC-MS/MS) analysis of biological samples and potentially, advanced mathematical modelling of data obtained. We are therefore looking for someone with a science background (BDS, BMBS, BSc Biomedical Sciences/Biology/Pharmacology/Chemistry or similar) with an aptitude for mathematics.
