QBC Diagnostics, Inc. Robert A Levine, M.D. Email: qbc@aol.com General review of the use of QBC for detection of Hematoparasites with hypertext linked references Quantitative Buffy Coat (QBC) analysis of blood for the detection of hematoparasitic diseases was first invented in 1980 by Levine and Wardlaw. The first clinical trial utilizing this technology for the diagnosis of a hematoparasitic disease, malaria, was performed in 1988. Since that time, without any organized effort, hundreds of articles and presentations have documented the utility of QBC as a simple, accurate and highly sensitive method of detecting the hematoparasites that cause, malaria, tick borne relapsing fever, sleeping sickness, filariasis, babesiosis and visceral leishmaniasis and most recently congenital, acute Chagas Disease as well as recrudescences of Chagas disease in patients with AIDS. The QBC technology is being improved so that vital hematological parameters, the hematocrit and platelet count, may be obtained at the same time as the diagnostic test is performed at no additional expense with only seconds of added time. These parameters are very important in clinical decisions and treatment. Anemia and or thrombocytopenia are important indicators of severe illness. A new battery powered, LED illuminated, and much less expensive ParaViewer is planned. There is no other technology that can diagnose all of the above hematoparasitic diseases with one test, at the same time, and have all the results including the hematology parameters available at the point of care. Patients do not ask if they have malaria, they ask to be diagnosed properly, promptly and accurately so that they may be properly treated. Only the QBC can accomplish this.
