DISMAC 1 MINISTRY OF PROVINCIAL DEVELOPMENT, MULTI ETHNIC AFFAIRS, NATIONAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT & SUGAR SITUATION REPORT National Emergency Operation Centre [Level 1, Regional House, 1 Knolly Street, Suva] Incident/Event Tropical Cyclone Mick SITREP No. 03/09 Date 14th December, 2009 Time as @ 4.00PM From NEOC To: As per Distribution list 1.0 GENERAL SITUATION At 1.30pm this afternoon a Special Weather Bulletin No. 10 was released stating that the Tropical Cyclone Storm Warning is in force for the Mamanucas, Yasawas, Vitilevu, Beqa, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, a gale warning remains in force for the rest of Fiji 2.0 WEATHER SITUATION Tropical Cyclone Mick (975HPA) centre Category 2 was located near 17 decimal 5 south 177 decimal 4 east or about 50km north-northwest of Nadi or 150km northwest of Suva at 2.00pm today by radar. The cyclone is intensifying close to its centre the cyclone is estimated to have average winds of 90 to 110km/hr and monetary gusts to 150km/hr and winds of 65km/hr to 80km/hr and monetary gusts to 100km/hr within 270km of centre. The cyclone is moving towards the southeast at 20km/hr. On this forecast track the cyclone centre is expected to lie about 120km to the southeast of Nadi or about 45 km south-southwest of Suva at midnight tonight and about 190km to the south-southeast of Suva or about 250km southwest of Lakeba at midday tomorrow. Destructive winds will begin a few hours before the centre passes overhead or nearby. For Yasawa and Mamanuca, Viti Levu, Beqa and nearby smaller islands destructive storm force winds with average speeds of 90 to 100km/hr with momentary gusts to 150km/hr. For the rest of Fiji : damaging gale force winds with average speeds of 65 to 80 km/hr with gusts to 100km/hr. Frequent heavy rain and squally thunderstorms. Flooding including seas flooding of low lying coastal areas For Rotuma, fresh and gusty northerly winds some rain and squally thunderstorms. Moderate to rough seas. Moderate northwest swell. 2 Marine Weather Bulletin Expect winds of 60 knots close to centre very high seas. Winds over 47 knots within 30 nautical miles of centre with very high seas, winds over 33 knots within 150 miles of centre with high seas. Damaging heavy northwest swells. Very poor visibility in heavy rain and squally thunderstorms. FEA Emergency Centre can be contacted through the following contacts: Landline Mobile No. Fax - 3224330 9999340 3311074/3311882 Fiji Electricity Authority has informed members of the public that due to damages caused by Cyclone Mick, power supply has been lost to the entire Western Division from Rakiraki to Sigatoka District. Most of the Central Division is also withput power supply except for certain areas. Wailoa Hydro Power Station has been shut down due to the rising water level in the Wailoa River. Furthermore due to the high risk involved as a result of galeforce winds and torrential rainfall., FEa had to pull back its repair and maintenance crews from the field to ensure their safety and will commence repair and power restoration works after the cyclone has passed through. Members of the public are reminded that there may be many broken power lines lying on the ground and the public are advised to treat all FEA power lines as live and furthermore please stay away from these broken lines and report the matter to FEA. Flooding is likely to occur due to continuous rainfall. National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) is monitoring the situation closely with skeleton staff. Similar operation both at Divisional and District level of the severely affected areas are monitoring the situation closely and submitting reports every now and again. 3.9 CONCLUSION Liaison with all stakeholders and supporting agencies in collating and coordinating reports as they are received will continue until the all clear sign is given by the Fiji Metrology Services. The Media, respective Ministries, Departments, Disaster Key Agencies and the general public are being briefed as the situation unfolds.
