2. Read the Directions! What do they fund? What don’t they fund?

3. Know Your Audience! Are you writing for a general academic audience or for your discipline?

4. If a personal narrative is required (e.g., Fulbright, NSF), make sure it is an intellectual biography.

5. Start early and revise, revise, revise. Your first draft is never as good as you think it is!

6. If rejected (NSF Dissertation, SSRC, Fulbright, etc.) revise and reapply.
