Image description
Lafleche was a French-Canadian settlement
founded around 1900. Today it has about 200
residents. As in many small Saskatchewan
towns, the local church is by far the most
substantial building.

date
There is a distinct Quebec influence in the
design of this church. The delicate columns
and broad choir loft are typical of churches
found throughout Quebec. The architect was
likely Québécois.
Almost unknown in Canada, Ste Radegonde is
a popular saint in France. The windows in this
church can be considered an extension of the
large installation begun in 1977 in the nearby
Assumption Cathedral at Gravelbourg.
Frederic Rault was in the process of assuming
leadership of the Rault studio in Rennes from
his father André in the late 1970s. Ste
Radegonde and Assumption were his first
Canadian commissions.

Frederic Rault continued the studio tradition of
incorporating dalle de verre with
conventionally painted glass. The Raults
created many variations using a mixture of the
two media.

Original Gouache Maquette:
Ste Radegonde
Photographed in the original Rault archives in
Rennes this “maquette” is a typical
presentation drawing which the Raults would
provide to clients for approval. The
preliminary quality of the sketch (in gouache
paint) indicates that the artist was free to
elaborate on his conceptual design. We plan to
show additional Rault maquettes in the future.

A depiction of the New Testament scene when
the pregnant Mary visits her cousin, Elizabeth,
who is also pregnant.

Mary Full of Grace (detail)
Frederic Rault’s painting style is different
from the typical depiction of Biblical figures as
Europeans seen in most windows in Canada.
These women appear Middle Eastern as of
course they were. Similar faces may be seen in
Frederic’s great Assumption Window in the
Gravelbourg Cathedral.

Mary Crowned by Christ the
King (detail)
Frederic Rault’s painting style seems to have
an Eastern influence. These women appear
Middle Eastern, and are quite different than the
typical depiction of Biblical figures as
Europeans. Comparable faces may be seen in
Frederic’s great Assumption Window in the
Gravelbourg Cathedral.

Elizabeth’s words to Mary are evoked in this
window. These women appear Middle Eastern
as, of course, they were. Similar faces may be
seen in Frederic’s great Assumption Window
in the nearby Gravelbourg Cathedral.

Christ Crowns His Mother
As far as we know from the New Testament
this scene did not occur during Mary’s lifetime.
It might be described as theological or even

The richness of dalle de verre set in lead cames
seems to be unique to the Rault studio.

Tribune Window with Dalle de
Verre Interlace
This spectacular example of Rault design may
be based on the drawings of Frederic’s
grandfather, Emmanuel, founder of the Rault
Studio in 1898. We have seen many variations
of interlaced designs, which Emmanuel would
create at home after a day at the workshop.

Tribune Quatrefoil in Dalle de

The tribune was a Roman soldier who, at
Christ’s Crucifixion, pierced His side with a
spear. Each chunk of glass in this composition
was shaped to using jewelers hammers.
