Today it has about 200 residents. As in many small Saskatchewan towns, the local church is by far the most substantial building. Dalle de Verre Window Above Entrance Interior View to Choir Loft Ste Radegonde Rose Window Image date There is a distinct Quebec influence in the design of this church. The delicate columns and broad choir loft are typical of churches found throughout Quebec. The architect was likely Québécois. Almost unknown in Canada, Ste Radegonde is a popular saint in France. The windows in this church can be considered an extension of the large installation begun in 1977 in the nearby Assumption Cathedral at Gravelbourg. Frederic Rault was in the process of assuming leadership of the Rault studio in Rennes from his father André in the late 1970s. Ste Radegonde and Assumption were his first Canadian commissions. Image order Artist Name Ste Radegonde Window Showing Dalle de Verre Surround (detail) Frederic Rault continued the studio tradition of incorporating dalle de verre with conventionally painted glass. The Raults created many variations using a mixture of the two media. Ste Radegonde, Lower Border (detail) Original Gouache Maquette: Ste Radegonde Photographed in the original Rault archives in Rennes this “maquette” is a typical presentation drawing which the Raults would provide to clients for approval. The preliminary quality of the sketch (in gouache paint) indicates that the artist was free to elaborate on his conceptual design. We plan to show additional Rault maquettes in the future. These women appear Middle Eastern as of course they were. Similar faces may be seen in Frederic’s great Assumption Window in the Gravelbourg Cathedral. 1979 160 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France Mary Crowned by Christ the King (detail) Frederic Rault’s painting style seems to have an Eastern influence. These women appear Middle Eastern, and are quite different than the typical depiction of Biblical figures as Europeans. Comparable faces may be seen in Frederic’s great Assumption Window in the Gravelbourg Cathedral. 1979 170 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France “The Lord is With Thee” (detail) Elizabeth’s words to Mary are evoked in this window. These women appear Middle Eastern as, of course, they were. Similar faces may be seen in Frederic’s great Assumption Window in the nearby Gravelbourg Cathedral. 1979 180 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France Christ Crowns His Mother As far as we know from the New Testament this scene did not occur during Mary’s lifetime. It might be described as theological or even 1979 190 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France theoretical. Cross in Dalle de Verre (detail) The richness of dalle de verre set in lead cames seems to be unique to the Rault studio. 1979 200 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France Tribune Window with Dalle de Verre Interlace This spectacular example of Rault design may be based on the drawings of Frederic’s grandfather, Emmanuel, founder of the Rault Studio in 1898. We have seen many variations of interlaced designs, which Emmanuel would create at home after a day at the workshop. 1979 210 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France Interlace Dalle de Verre (detail) 1979 220 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France Tribune Quatrefoil (dalle de verre) 1979 230 Ste Radegonde Church Lafleche, Saskatchewan Frederic Rault, Rennes, France Original Gouache Maquette: Tribune Window Another original design in the Rault Archives in Rennes.
