AHDB JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title Breeding Specialist (12 month fixed term to cover maternity leave) Department EBLEX / Signet Location Working from Home / Edinburgh Grade £22,000- £30,000 Line Manager (Job Title) Samuel Boon (Signet Manager) MAIN PURPOSE OF THE DEPARTMENT AND JOB To identity and recruit new Sheepbreeder and Beefbreeder clients in order to expand the business To provide beef and sheep breeding consultancy to Signet’s clients. To raise the general understanding of modern breeding improvement technology among beef and sheep breeders and producers. To act as Project Manager for corporate and government funded activity in the breeding improvement sector. DIMENSIONS: AUTHORITY LEVELS & DECISION MAKING To be Advised Budgetary responsibility: The post holder will be responsible for earning a target income, set by the Breeding Consultancy Manager. The post holder will strive to operate efficiently to minimise the cost of providing services. The post holder will meet or favorably exceed budgets set by the management of any projects managed. To improve the understanding of the principles of objective animal breeding in the pedigree breeding and commercial production sectors by selling consultancy and through group meetings. To promote within the industry the value of Signet’s specialist recording and genetic evaluation services to livestock producers, especially beef and sheep. To support the Breeding Services bureau in the collation and validation of data. To submit data, business reports, and other administrative documents punctually as directed by the Breeding Consultancy Manager To contribute to Signet’s programme of meetings, demonstrations and other promotional activities, which will include the preparation of written material and giving talks when appropriate. To work with allied industry organisations, particularly breed societies and breeding groups, to achieve the overall objectives of the post. To undertake such other duties appropriate to training and experience as may be required by the Breeding Consultancy Manager. Additional responsibilities To act as Project Manager as directed by the Breeding Consultancy Manager. To assist the development of markets for improved beef and sheep breeding stock. To establish collaborative links with other organisations serving livestock producers and the related industries, with the aim of providing Signet services to them and joint services with them to Signet clients. To assist in the identification of problems facing livestock producers outside of the specific product development responsibilities and in the formulations of possible solutions that could be promoted by Signet. 2 To assist management in the identification of priorities for research and development relating especially to livestock production outside of the specific product development responsibilities. KNOWLEDGE / EXPERTISE / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Minimum professional/education requirements to carry out the job: Knowledge of Advanced animal breeding systems design and technology Beef and Sheep production systems. General farming technology, economics and structures.
