Stanford University Medical Center is a Level-1 trauma center and world-renowned quaternary care center located in beautiful northern California, in the city of Palo Alto, just outside of San Francisco. Since 2007, Stanford has offered an EM Ultrasound Fellowship open to outside application and is one year long starting in August of every year. This fellowship is based on the ACEP and SAEM Guidelines for Ultrasound Fellowships, and will be enhanced by training in both our Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments with ultrasound faculty experts both within the emergency department and with close colleagues outside the emergency department setting. Education - The fellow will obtain advanced education in emergency ultrasound (EUS). This occurs through didactic sessions, during regular high-yield hands-on scanning shifts in the adult and pediatric ED with EUS faculty, and our weekly QA sessions. Due to the outstanding relationship we have with the radiology department, echocardiology lab, critical care units, and Lucile Packard’s Children’s hospital, you also have the opportunity to obtain additional advanced hands-on training. The sky is the limit here and many more opportunities exist. Teaching - This is one of the fundamental elements of the fellowship. The fellow is very active in medical student and resident lectures, US workshops (at Stanford as well as national conferences or private workshops, and international). This also includes US scanning shifts to teach other residents/medical students/mid-level providers. The fellow will also have responsibilities to teach the residents/students who are on our 2-4 week US elective, maintain our QA of the month blog. Research - The fellow is responsible to do one original research project during their time here, and that is not hard to accomplish! We have several original projects/US reviews in progress. The fellow will also be coordinating the quarterly ultrasound journal club article review to keep us all up-to-date on US research. The year is very productive! Administrative - The fellow is in charge of the Quality Assurance of all ultrasound images from the ED ensuring compliance and credentialing. This is with faculty support and supervision and allows for great independence/responsibility with our program. The fellow is also responsible for doing one administrative project in the year, this is not hard to accomplish and is usually quite enjoyable to the fellow. You will truly learn how to create and maintain an US program anywhere. Clinical - The fellow will be responsible to attend in the ED 8 shifts per month. During those 8-hour shifts, they will have ample opportunity to continue US teaching as well as emergency care and patient management. This can be some of the most fun times! International - During the year, the US fellow will have the opportunity to go abroad for international ultrasound education programs.
