Miki:
No, I’m from Japan.
Maria:
Oh, I’m sorry.

Maria:
Say, Miki, can you answer a question for me?
Miki:
I can try.
Maria:
Well, is Japanese writing the same as Chinese writing? I mean, it
looks more or less the same.
Miki:
Well, not really. In fact, it’s quite different. Japanese does use some
Chinese characters. So, for example, the way we write big is the
same in Chinese and Japanese, but we don’t say them the same way.
Maria:
Oh, I see.
Part 3
Miki:
And Japanese uses two other writing systems, too. Hiragana and
katakana.
Maria:
Really? Why?
© Oxford University Press. Permission to edit and reproduce for instructional use.

Miki:
Well, we use hiragana for writing Japanese words, and katakana for
writing foreign words.
Maria:
And you write some Chinese characters, too?
Miki:
Yeah, that’s right.
Maria:
How many Chinese characters are there?
Miki:
Some people say there are over fifty thousand, but in Japan, we only
use about two thousand in daily life. In China, they use many more.
That’s amazing!
Maria:
Part 4
Maria:
How big is Japan?
Miki:
Hmm, it’s a bit smaller than California.
Maria:
Wow. I thought it was much bigger than that.
Miki:
No. And because there are a lot of mountains, almost all of the
people live in big cities.
Maria:
So what’s the population of Japan?
Miki:
About a hundred and twenty-seven million.
Maria:
Wow! The cities must be really crowded.
Miki:
Yeah, they are. But you can still find peace and quiet in parks and
gardens.

The Horseshoe Falls, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, is one of the most
spectacular sights to see in Canada. If you are brave enough, you can take a boat
trip to experience the famous waterfall — but you will get very wet!
Vancouver Island is a great place to visit, and at the right time of year you
can go whale watching.
The National Park in Banff is great for cycling or driving through. You
can also take a walking tour and see some beautiful scenery. You might see a
bear or a moose too, so don’t forget your camera!

[TRACK 45]
Woman 1: Mayuko, from Japan, came to visit my family last summer. We
visited lots of places. One day, we went to Australia Zoo. You can
see native Australian animals there. Mayuko took a lot of photos of
kangaroos, koalas, and crocodiles. But I don’t think she liked the
snakes.
Man 1:
Last year was amazing. We spent Christmas Day on the beach. I
love swimming in the sea, and I really wanted to visit Bondi
Beach. It’s very famous. Wow! What a great place to celebrate
Christmas Day – in the summertime!
Man 2:
I was staying in Sydney, and I’m not interested in shopping or
surfing. So, one day I went to the Blue Mountains National Park.
It’s not far from Sydney. It is such a beautiful place. I walked
through forests, and saw mountains and waterfalls. I loved it.

Woman 2: Three years ago, I went to Australia to study English, and I stayed
in Melbourne. Every year, in Melbourne, there’s a horse race called
the Melbourne Cup. Everybody in Australia watches this race. I
was in my English class, but the teacher stopped the class to watch
the race on TV. All the students in my class tried to guess which
horse would win. And guess what? My horse won!
