Main
The Department of Biological Sciences offers a range of undergraduate,
graduate, and postdoctoral training programs. Home to a vibrant
community of life scientists, the department’s research spans the scales
of biological organization, from molecules and cells to organisms,
populations, species, and communities. An emphasis on
interdisciplinary and collaborative research gives faculty and students
opportunities to investigate a diverse array of living systems using a
wide variety of research approaches and tools — from X-ray
crystallography, molecular assays, and computational genomic
analyses to advanced microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging, and
field research in Antarctica, Africa, and the Pacific Ocean.
Faculty from the department’s three sections — Marine Environmental
Biology, Molecular and Computational Biology, and Neuroscience —
direct graduate students in five distinct doctoral programs:

Faculty
Biological Sciences has more than 60 full-time faculty members, as well
as more than 20 faculty with joint appointments and 15 visiting or
adjunct professors. Among its many distinctions and honors, the Ph.D.
program faculty includes two members of the National Academy of
Sciences, four members of the American Academy of Arts and
Sciences, and 18 holders of endowed chairs and professorships.

Neuroscience
Neurobiologists in the biological sciences
department take part in the university-wide, highly
interdisciplinary USC Neuroscience Graduate Program.
USC Neuroscience takes a fundamentally interdisciplinary approach
to understanding neural function and the brain. Faculty from more
than 20 departments take part in the program, undertaking research in
cognitive, cellular and molecular, systems, computational, and clinical
neurosciences.
