861 MAINTENANCE of CATTLEGUARDS, TRAFFIC GATES and BARRIERS,
GUARDRAILS, and RETAINING WALLS (8/07)
861.01
Service Required
Maintain cattleguards, traffic gates and barriers, guardrails, retaining walls and
appurtenances. Remove traffic gates and barriers.
861.02
Performance Standard
A. Cattleguard maintenance is complete when: it is free of structural defects, the deck
provides a smooth, stable, compact transition to the adjacent road surface, and
presents no traffic or livestock hazards; the wings are functional and secured to the
deck and post; debris and other materials have been removed from the vault area to
the full depth of the foundation over the entire width; and designated signs are in
compliance with MUTCD and EM 7100-15 Standards for Forest Service Signs and
Posters.
B. Traffic gate maintenance is complete when it is free of structural defects, the gate and
all associated posts are stable and the locking mechanism is in working order, the
surfaces are free of oxidation and painted, and all designated signs are in compliance
with MUTCD and EM 7100-15 Standards for Forest Service Signs and Posters.
C. Guardrail maintenance is complete when it is free of structural defects, and all posts
and rails are stable, secure, aligned, and in compliance with State Standards and
“AASHTO Roadside Design Guide”.
D. Guardrail barrier maintenance is complete when it is free of structural defects, all
posts and rails are stable, secure and aligned, and all designated signs are in
compliance with MUTCD and EM 7100-15 Standards for Forest Service Signs and
Posters.
E. Jersey barrier maintenance is complete when it is stable, aligned and all designated
signs are in compliance with MUTCD and EM 7100-15 Standards for Forest Service
Signs and Posters.
F. Rock and earth barrier maintenance is complete when it is stable, aligned and at the
dimensions SHOWN ON THE PLANS, and all designated signs are in compliance with
MUTCD and EM 7100-15 Standards for Forest Service Signs and Posters.
G. Retaining wall maintenance is complete when the wall is stable, aligned and repaired
to the original lines and grades, and the materials used are equal to or exceed the
original wall material.

H. Removal of gates and barriers is complete when they have been removed and
disposed of as designated and the road is passable by the intended traffic.
861.03
Location of Work
As specified on roads listed on the ROAD LISTING, SHOWN ON THE PLANS, or as
ordered by the Contracting Officer.
861.04
Measurement
Measurement under this Section will be made by the total number of units for each
item listed in the SCHEDULE OF ITEMS completed and accepted.
Linear Foot: Work activities by the linear foot measured by using
standard survey methods rounded to the nearest one (1)
foot.
861.05
Payment
A. The accepted quantities will be paid at the contract price per unit of measurement
for the Section 861 pay items listed in the schedule of items. Payment will be full
compensation for the work prescribed in this Section.
