Summer Literacy Skill Tips (SK)
Alphabet Knowledge
 Practice reciting the alphabet together
 Practice recognizing all the letters of the alphabet
 Use ABC books and find and recognize letters
 Use ABC magnets on the fridge and find and recognize letters
Letter-Sound Correspondence
 Practice saying the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make (e.g., A says ‘aah’, B says ‘buh’ etc.)
 Use ABC books to label letter name and sound it makes
 Use ABC magnets to label letter name and sound it makes
 Use ABC flashcards to label letter name and sound it makes
Word Awareness
 Practice counting words in sentences orally and in print
 Clap out words in sentences orally (e.g., Clap with me “The (clap) cat (clap) is (clap) running (clap)” = four words)
 Point to and count words in sentences in print in stories (e.g., point to each word and count the number of
words in simple sentences)
 Practice pointing to words as you read them together
Syllable Awareness
 Practice blending and segmenting syllables in words
 Practice blending syllables in words you have broken up (e.g., What word am I saying? “Ba – na – na” = banana)
 Practice clapping out and segmenting syllables in words together (e.g., Let’s clap out syllables in words “El (clap)
– a (clap) – phant (clap)” = elephant)
 Practice this with names, words etc.
Rhyme Awareness
 Practice identifying and producing rhymes together
 Practice identifying whether or not two words rhyme (e.g., “Do cat and rat rhyme?” = yes, “Do dog and bark
rhyme?” = no)
 Practice producing rhymes together (e.g.,” What rhymes with bed?” = red, fed, said, led, etc.)
 Read nursery rhymes and rhyming patterned books together – note the rhymes for your child as you read
together
Sound Awareness
 Practice identifying beginning, middle and final sounds in words
 Start with the beginning sound (e.g., “What sound is at the beginning of boy? = ‘buh’)
 Then try the final sound (e.g., “What sound is at the end of dog? = ‘guh’)
 Last try the middle sound (e.g., “What sound is in the middle of cat? = ‘aah’)
Sound Blending and Segmenting
 Practice blending and segmenting sounds in words
 Practice blending sounds in words (e.g., “What word am I saying – cuh – aah – tuh?” = cat)
 Practice segmenting sounds in words together (e.g., “What sounds do you hear in the word dog?” = duh – aaw –
guh )
 Practice these skills with print to model early reading/decoding skills
