St. Stephen’s Slovak Roman Catholic Cemetery Shenandoah Heights, West Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill, PA Note from the recorder, Andy Ulicny: This is my first attempt at enumerating a cemetery. I wish to enter some of my idiosyncrasies to help the users of this file. I worked using a laptop computer and a nice lawn chair, enjoying the cooler hours of the morning, June 2008. Obviously burials at a later date are not recorded here. I did not create an index. I have not have a computer program to do so. I recommend the user employ the “find” function under the “edit” tab to quickly find names. I use this wonderful tool often to quickly scan websites for genealogical purposes. While I’m generally attempting to enumerate row by row, so as to not miss any tombstones, I saw no reason to be neurotic about it. I often will jump to the next row if I am in easy position to see it or if the adjacent plot seems related to the one I’m currently recording. I have made an attempt to group names from each stone, or plot from the eldest generation toward the most recent if it is apparent. I looked for the logical pattern most genealogists would use, not a top to bottom, or right to left pattern. Anything in italics is my personal addition, not something from the tombstone. I am somewhat familiar with many of these families from my research and although I do not wish for this to be an annotated record, when I could easily list some obvious factual data to clarify the relationships , I have. For facility in typing, I have used numbers for months and the more recently acceptable computer friendly style of recording dates using periods. When full dates were provided, the month is first in the standard American manner of recording. This was more automatic for me rather than the often accepted genealogical variation or the reversed European system. I have, on occasion, included some added prayers, or sentiments recorded on the stone, but this is not complete. My purspose was a useful genealogical transcription, not a full recording. I did feel it pertinent to record military service. In regards to Slovak words, I also have felt free to translate Slovak words for birth and death into English and merely recorded the listed dates in the appropriate columns I have established. I have usually kept, and then translated, Otec for Father and Matka for Mother as it seemed culturally relevant. llll Recording of tombstones begins at the entrance gate, left side recorded first then move toward the back of the cemetery. I will note return to front and right side. Oravitz, Steven Jennie A. Hannis, Michael Maria Straka, Edward Yanofchik, Elenore Mary E. Yanofchick, Cloarence P.
