ABOUT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
The department has an outstanding international reputation in key areas of current
research including applied theory, microeconometrics, game theory, labour
economics, development economics, macroeconomics, industrial economics and
environmental economics. It is one of only two economics departments in the UK to
achieve the 'double 5*' rating in the two most recent national Research Assessment
Exercises, achieving the top 5* grade in 1996 and in 2001.
ABOUT THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS OF MIGRATION
CReAM is an interdisciplinary research centre based in the Department of
Economics at UCL conducting research on migration and labour economics. The
main offices are situated in Drayton House, a recently refurbished building adjacent
to UCL’s main campus in central London where the role will be based.
JOB DESCRIPTION
CReAM is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral research associate to work on the
NORFACE Research Programme with funding initially until April 30th 2014.
SALARY
The starting salary for this position will be Grade 7, Point 29 of UCL Salary Scales
(£29,837) per annum plus £2,862 London Allowance p.a.
HOURS OF WORK
The UCL full-time working week totals 36.5 hours. Exact working arrangements are
determined by the Director of NORFACE, Christian Dustmann. Annual leave is 27
days per year. In addition, staff benefit from six College closure days per year. The
person appointed will work at the offices of the Department of Economics, Drayton
House, 30 Gordon Street, London WC1H 0AX.

Main Purpose
The postholder will participate in projects relating to the NORFACE Research
Programme: Migration in Europe – Social, Economic, Cultural and Policy Dynamics
or to CReAM’s other research activities on migration.
Duties and Responsibilities

To contribute to the overall activities of the research centre and department
as required.

As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and
amended in consultation with the postholder

The postholder will carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit
and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or Head of
Department/Division

The postholder will actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities

The postholder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and
Health & Safety Regulations.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

A PhD in Economics

An aptitude and commitment to high quality research and ability to work
collaboratively and as part of a team to short deadlines is key.

Good interpersonal skills and intellectual breadth as required for work in the
research project.

A thorough knowledge of economic theory, statistics and econometrics.

Experience in handling data sets.

Knowledge of statistical and econometric software.

Ability to analyse and write up data.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Fluency in English is essential.

Experience of working in a research environment.

