Approximately 5.4 million people in US are currently afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease, with an expectation of approximately 14 million by 2030. In 2011 new criteria and guidelines for diagnosis were established for the first time in 27 years, spearheaded by the Alzheimer’s Association and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This workshop will cover those criteria and diagnostic guidelines, early recognition, current and proposed treatments, behavioral and psychosocial interventions, and recommended strategies for prevention. Target Audience This training is for all individuals who provide care to older adults, such as nurses, social workers, case managers, nursing home administrators, personal care home administrators, and physical therapists. Content for this presentation was prepared by: Ms. Linda Shumaker, RN-BC, MA, is a registered nurse currently serving as Outreach Coordinator of the Pennsylvania Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition. She has extensive clinical experience working in community mental health, geriatric assessment teams and long-term care. In addition, she has been an instructor of psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. She has served as a founding member and former Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Behavioral Health and Aging Coalition, as a member of the Older Adult Committee of Pennsylvania Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Planning Council, and as a member of the Long Term Care Subcommittee of the Medical Assistance Advisory Committee. She has also previously served on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania State Alzheimer’s Association and the Advisory Board for the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. David Gill, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center. He is a cognitive and behavioral neurologist who brings expertise in the assessment of memory disorders. Carol Hancock Gold, PhD, Senior Research Associate, Center for Healthy Aging, Pennsylvania State University. She is a gerontologist with a biobehavioral health background who brings expertise in psychological and physiological aspects of diseases and disabilities that affect older persons. She is also the Coordinator of the Penn State Site of the Geriatric Education Center of PA.
