BEST PRACTICES TRAINING
The Child Care Food Program Roundtable will be presenting best practices training with funding
from the Consumer Cases Vitamin Settlement Fund grant. The training will be presented in the
following two parts:
Part 1: The Feeding Relationship: Helping Children to Eat Well
Since 2002, Choices for Children (CFC) has been engaged in the Santa Clara Co. Childhood
Feeding Collaborative, focusing on preventing childhood obesity through a research-supported
model education program to improve early childhood feeding practices among high-risk, lowincome families. Through a learner centered class, "5 Keys to Raising Healthy, Happy Eaters,"
CFC provides simple, consistent best practice feeding messages for child caregivers/parents in
English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The class engages participants in identifying and adopting
behavior changes to normalize meals and support obesity prevention. In this session we will
provide a 3 hour train the trainer class to identify personal eating attitudes, review and discuss the
background principles of the "Division of Responsibility" in feeding young children and teach how
to use the key messages in a parent/caregiver class. All materials will be provided.
Part 2: Nutrition & Physical Activity Self Assessment: An Essential Step for Change
Promoting healthful eating and physically active environments in child care settings can be
supported by training child care providers to assess their home or center and to develop policies
that support healthy nutrition and physical activity in their individual settings. This workshop will
provide training for CACFP staff to assist providers in conducting a field tested nutrition and
physical activity site self assessment which provides a platform for motivating change in the child
care nutrition and physical activity environment. The Contra Costa Child Care Council has been
developing this training curriculum for the past 2 years
