General characteristics summary
Work consists of a number of simple repetitive tasks associated with the care of laboratory animals in the
university, and typically requires completion of junior high school with no experience and enrollment in the
CALAS/ARLAT course.
Representative duties/activities

Maintains a clean environment for all animals assigned to the incumbent’s care

Maintains supplies of food and water

Monitors the health status of each animal

Assists investigators on handling and restraining animals

Maintains daily records of the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity)\Maintains daily
records of the number of animals housed for billing purposes

Prepare veterinary reports when animals become sick

Operates ranch equipment and erect fences for positions that assist with the care of cattle, bison
and deer in a ranch setting

 Administers feeding programs to cattle or poultry in farm building or facility

 Maintains supplies of food and water
 Monitors the health status of each animal
 Assists investigators on handling and restraining animals
 Maintains daily records of the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity)
 Maintains daily records of the number of animals housed for billing purposes
 Prepare veterinary reports when animals become sick
 Assists manager with collection of body fluids, injection of material in accordance with research
protocols
 May be required to euthanize the animals
 Sets up, strips and fumigates animal rooms as required
 Receives, ships, and separates animals accordingly
 Reports sick animals to the veterinarian
 Administers feeding programs to cattle or poultry in farm building or facility
 Milks cows using specialized equipment and regularly cleans farm buildings
 Provides demonstration training to students
