Pupil Writing Tasks - NOUNS Teacher Note: These are designed for children to extend their understanding of grammatical function, and to provide a personal ‘writer’s handbook’ to which the child can refer to strengthen their own writing. They can be done in a writing journal or personal word book, or used as extension activities for children who finish the grammar exercises. The list below gets progressively more difficult so you could allocate tasks to different pupils. Level 3 (UK National Curriculum) Write expanded noun phrases relating to people, e.g. the girl in the white linen dress the boy in grey trousers the wizened old man crouched over his fire Write expanded noun phrases or clauses relating to place or setting, e.g. the small white house on the hill the dank cave, smelling of rotten fish and seaweed the tangled briars surrounding the castle Pupil Writing Tasks - NOUNS Level 4 (UK National Curriculum) Write expanded noun phrases using a relative clause, e.g. the sun, which was setting in a blaze of glory the miserable woman in the shop, who never smiled the large brown dog, which was chewing my shoe Pupil Writing Tasks - NOUNS Level 5 (UK National Curriculum) Write expanded noun phrases, using a relative clause, which are punctuated by parenthetic commas and formed into a complete sentence, e.g. The tall man on the beach, who was walking his dog, turned and came towards me. The girl in the white linen dress, who was flying her kite, suddenly let go of the string.
