About the speaker
Michael Creech is Principal Consultant (Coal Geology) at SRK Consulting. His undergraduate study was
completed at the Australian National University in 1981; he also has completed a Master of Science (Geology)
at the University of Technology in 1993, and a PhD in Geology at the University of Newcastle in 2007. In 2007
he was awarded the “Excellence in Coal Geology” by NSW Coalfield Geology Council. His PhD research led
directly to the discovery of the Mangoola Mine in the Hunter Valley. His 30 years plus experience has
included minerals, coal and coal seam gas exploration and production roles.
He has a strong coal geology background but has recently held CSG exploration management roles in
Queensland, NSW and overseas. During his coal mining career he was involved in several gas exploration
programs aimed at understanding gas distribution and he participated in committees providing oversight to
various ACARP projects involved in estimating open cut fugitive emissions. He brings these experiences to this
presentation, outlining geological processes and observations that despite being widely published, observed
and generally accepted by practitioners may not always be adequately applied to the development of an
industry that is growing in importance both here and abroad.
Abstract of talk
The geology of coal and the genesis of coal seam gas results in unconventional gas reservoirs that require
practitioners to have a good grounding in coal as well as oil and gas. The nature of the peat forming
environment and the ubiquitous role of biogenic recharge, results in reservoirs that are often highly variable
over short distances and influenced by what may be perceived as relatively minor structural features. By
understanding these processes and identifying the geological features responsible for such variations
exploration can be better targeted, reserves can be reported more accurately and most importantly likely
production variations across a planned or producing field can be anticipated.
