Narrative Writing Prompts –
Select a prompt to write a narrative (story). Be sure to include all of the elements of
literature – character, setting, theme, plot, conflict, tone and mood.
1- Imagine that a character is given the task of saving the world. What obstacles
will your character face? Who will aid with your character? Where will your
character need to go? Write a narrative describing the character’s conflict.
Ex. – Hercules

Percy Jackson
2- Myths explain why something happens the way it does in nature. Think of a
mystery of nature you would like to explain by writing a myth.
Ex. – Why there are seasons
Why the Leopard has Spots
3- One individual can change a society. Write a story about one particular person
who did so. Did anyone oppose this person? Were his/ her problems unique to
his/ her setting? How did the character change along with the society?
Ex. – Katniss Everdeen
4- Ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Write a story describing a time that
a regular person did something remarkable. Who helped them? Did the setting
affect the development of the story?
Ex – Harry Potter
