Her birth date is a few days out, but the parents names and birth place agree. A death this late may have an on line obit? Or the local papers may be on line. I note that she was using the name of Ruth M SHIELDS in the 1940 census when her mother was in the house (also named Ruth) so it appears that this is the name she used throughout her adult life at least. I only ever found 1 child, and that is Florence R. She married John Edward SAMPLES (son of Loyd SAMPLES and Etta Elizina BEANMANE, born 1921 in Oklahoma) in Los Angeles 22nd Dec 1942. Her death registration shows her full names as Florence Ruth, and her birthday as 26th Nov 1923. She died in Solarno 23rd Dec 1987. I found John SAMPLES in 1930 census with his mother Etta and a sister Nellie. Etta was born in Illinois, and they were living in Oklahoma. I don't have access to the original census records, but Etta is a widow. Her ethnic origins are German, as this is the birthplace of her parents. John Edward SAMPLES died in Solarno Ca 10th Jan 1988 Sid I think I have tracked the SAMPLES to Indian Territory. John Edward SAMPLES says he was born in Norman Oklahoma when he married Ruth (Maria), date c 1921. He says his father Loyd was born in the same place (date must be prior to 1903), and his mother was from South Dakota. In 1910 I found Loyd A SAMPLES with his parents John S SAMPLES and Willie SAMPLES (female). Willie's birth place was Indiana, which I know is not South Dakota!! but I reckon we are on a winner anyway, as I also found the Etta/Loyd marriage, where Loyd's age matches. (see attached). Etta's nee name is actually BAUMAN, which is the same as it appears on the original of her son's marriage (mis-transcribed as BEANMANE) Name: Loyd A Samples Titles and Terms: undefined Event Type: Census Event Year: 1910 Event Place: Noble, Cleveland, Oklahoma, United States District: 28 Gender: Male Age: 17 Marital Status: Single Race: White Race (Original): White Relationship to Head of Household: Son Relationship to Head of Household (Original): Son Birth Year (Estimated): 1893 Birthplace: Oklahoma Immigration Year: undefined Father's Birthplace: Missouri Mother's Birthplace: Indiana Sheet Number and Letter: 5A Household ID: 79 Line Number: undefined Affiliate Name: The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) Affiliate Publication Number: M1283 GS Film number: 1375258 Digital Folder Number: 004449551 Image Number: 01049 Household Role John S Samples Willie Samples Wife Loyd A Samples Gender Age Head M F 34 Son M Birthplace 39 Missouri Indiana 17 Oklahoma Citing this Record: "United States Census, 1910," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MLQC-H6M : accessed 30 Jun 2014), Loyd A Samples in household of John S Samples, Noble, Cleveland, Oklahoma, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 28, sheet 5A, family 79, NARA microfilm publication T624, FHL microfilm 1375258. Now we come to a fib - Etta was saying she was a widow in in 1930, but I found Loyd aged 47 born in Indian territory with a wife named Ople M aged 23, still living in Noble, Oa, in the 1940 census. Loyd who was born in Indian Territory in 1893 will be difficult to track, as Oklahoma did not start keeping state-wide records until 1903. The best anyone will be able to do (in my uninformed and inexperienced (with USA) opinion) will be to try to find him in early census with his parents, then look at land records in Oklahoma to see if parents were part of the and rush. I believe the land records are extensive, but I expect some high degree of expertise will be needed to understand them. SO - Indian territory, Oklahoma in 1893 was ----At precisely twelve noon on September 16, 1893 a cannon's boom unleashed the largest land rush America ever saw. Carried by all kinds of transportation - horses, wagons, trains, bicycles or on foot - an estimated 100,000 raced to claim plots of land in an area of land in northern Oklahoma Territory known as the Cherokee Strip. There had been a number of previous land rushes in the Territory - but this was the big one. The Great Land Rush Begins In 1828 Congress designated the land that would become Oklahoma as Indian Territory. White settlers were required to leave, and a number of tribes from the East and South were forcibly moved into the area from their ancestral lands. Chief among these were the Five Civilized Tribes - the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole - who allied themselves with the South during the Civil War. Following the war, the US government looked upon these tribes as defeated enemies. This animosity combined with increasing pressure to open up the Indian Territory to white settlement prompted the first land rush in 1885, a second followed in 1889. By the time of the Oklahoma land rush of 1893, America was in the grip of the worst economic depression it had ever experienced. This was one of the factors that swelled the number of expectant land-seekers that day. Many would be disappointed. There were only 42,000 parcels of land available - far too few to satisfy the hopes of all those who raced for land that day. Additionally, many of the "Boomers" - those who had waited for the cannon's boom before rushing into the land claim - found that a number of the choice plots had already been claimed by "Sooners" who had snuck into the land claim area before the race began. The impact of the land rush was immediate, transforming the land almost overnight. from http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/landrush.htm AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST I found Harry William SAMPLES born to a mother whose maiden name was SHIELDS. 5Th March 1945 in Los Angeles, Ca. Name: Harry William Samples Event Type: Birth Event Date: 05 Mar 1945 Event Place: Los Angeles, California, United States Gender: Male Mother's Name: Shields Citing this Record: "California, Birth Index, 1905-1995," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V27N-ZMV : accessed 30 Jun 2014), Harry William Samples, 05 Mar 1945; citing Los Angeles, California, United States, Department of Health Services, Vital Statistics Department, Sacramento. Harry married Dawna L BEAVER (he was 21 and she was 16) 6th November 1966 in Mendocina, Ca. Divorced 1969 Johnnie R SNOW (I assume this is a woman) in the same place 9th April 1971 – Divorced 1979 He also married Donna GRAY in the same place 23rd June 1979 – Divorced 1984 He also married Marion S MALUGANI in the same place 22 nd Nov 1984 I expect he will be hard to find, as he SURELY must be dodging the alimony payments. Obviously we have 2 winners here. Marion (no divorce on record) and Johnnie who hung in there for 8 years Children (but the records may not be complete) Harry D SAMPLES born 15th May 1972, mother SNOW PS Mendocina looks a realy great place. Population is only 824 (in 2000), so it looks as if Harry may have married everyone in the place of the right sex (except possibly Johnnie) and age. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mendocino,_California
