Charles Papasoff
/ Bio
Musician, composer, arranger, producer and actor, Charles Papasoff is a multi-facetted artist. Best know in the jazz
community as a baritone saxophonist, Papasoff plays numerous instruments, covers many musical styles and spends
a lot of time both in the recording studio and on stage.
In recent years, Charles Papasoff has been very active as a composer. On top of writing for his band the “Papasoff
Qtet”, he has scored films such as Michel Jetté’s “Bumrush” (2011), the documentary by Jean-Daniel Lafond
“American Fugitive, The Truth about Hassan” (2006) and the feature film by Canadian director Marie-Jan Seille “La
lune viendra d’elle même” (2004) (nominated for a Genie for best musical score). The 2011 Festival International de
Film d’Aubagne, France, commissioned him to direct the Master class for film composition culminating in a live to
film performance during the closing ceremonies.
Awed by the modern dance world, he has composed the score for “Ulysses, nous et les sirènes” (2010) and “Plus
seule qu’en solo” (2004), both for French choreographer Dominique Porte and “L’homme filigrane” (2000) by
French choreographer Myriam Naisy.
As a producer, he has etched Dawn Tyler Watson and Paul Deslauriers’s CD “…en duo” (Record of the year, Lys
Blues Awards, 2008) and Coral Egan’s “Magnify” (2007) and “My Favorite Distraction” (Producer of the year,
ADISQ Felix Awards 2004).
We can listen to his work as an arranger on the CD “Nocturno” (2008) by Bïa and on Geneviève Toupin’s self
titled CD (2009). As a saxophonist, he has participated on numerous sessions, most recently with Kevin Parent et
Guillaume Arsenault.
On the production side, many accomplishments are tributary of his work, for example : the Coral Egan concert at
L’Espace Dell Arte (2007), Dawn Tyler Watson et Paul Deslauriers’s CD “…en duo” (2007) and his very own CD
“Papasoff Live” (2010) for his group, the Papasoff Qtet.
Finally, the actor has played in numerous projects these past years, such as, for television: “Tout sur moi” and
“Toute la vérité” (2010), for the cinema: Denys Villeneuve’s “Next Floor” (Best short, Cannes 2008) and “In Cold
Love” (2009) from Franck Blaess, where Papasoff holds the leading role.
Charles Papasoff is a member of the following organizations:
AFM, SOCAN, SODRAC, SACD, SPACQ, ACTRA, UDA
