Southern Oregon University Library Special Collections Marjorie B. Kocher Brass Rubbings Collection Monumental Brasses of the British Isles #009 ANNOTATED CHRONOLOGICAL LISTING OF MONUMENTAL BRASSES OF THE BRITISH ISLES Introduction and Scope Note (Revised May 4, 2005) Marjorie B. Kocher of Bend, Oregon contributed this collection of eighty medieval monumental brass rubbings of the British Isles, several of which are framed, to Hannon Library in 2004. Kocher also presented the library with a collection of reference books and publications of the Monumental Brass Society of London. Rubbings of memorial monuments are an important source of information about the evolution of military armor, religious vestments, and other dress and customs in the British Isles in this era. This collection, which includes rubbings (wax engravings) of monuments which date from the 13th to 17th centuries, is useful to scholars of Medieval Studies and Shakespeare and his times. Marjorie Kocher is a former member of the Monumental Brass Society of London and has been a guest Gresham lecturer for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Kocher collected the rubbings of large brass funerary monuments in the 1960’s before the practice was discontinued due to preservation concerns. Kocher’s rubbings have been exhibited numerous times. Kocher provided accompanying information that she authored, including her “Annotated Listing of Monumental Brasses of the British Isles” and “Monumental Brasses of the British Isles: An Introduction.” Guide to Collection Contents Death Box Name/Location Comments Size WxL 1277 1 Sir John D’Aubermon Mary’s Church Stoke D’Abernon Surrey A Sheriff of Surrey – the oldest surviving brass in the British Isles.
