Part II: Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions
A. Narrative Report of Research, Teaching, and Clinical
Contributions:
I have an active research interest in the development and delivery of gene therapy vectors for
CNS disorders including cellular engineering using chimeric T-cell receptors for glioma therapy,
gene transfer of anti and pro-angiogenic molecules for cancer and ischemia applications, and
development of novel methods for CNS gene transfer. These activities are supported by a 5 year
NIH Career Research Award, the Bayer Research Foundation, the Brain Tumor Society and the
Goldhirsh Foundation. In this role, I have an active effort in mentoring post doctoral fellows as
well as supervising the activity of research technicians. Teaching efforts include organization of
MGH Department of Neurosurgery continuing education grand rounds. As part of our Harvard
Medical School curriculum for rotating students in neurosurgery, I conduct teaching sessions
with each student rotating on the service discussing cerebral trauma including pathophysiology
and clinical management. On the national level, I am an active member of the Joint Sections on
Cerebrovascular Surgery and Neuro-oncology and have regular teaching assignments in
seminars at the national meetings of these organizations.

Bench Project: "Genetically Engineered Anti-Angiogenic Anti-Glioma CTL's"- Role: Primary
investigator on NIH career research award. Primary Investigator on Goldhirsh Foundation Grant
and Brain Tumor Society Grant. The goal of this project is to genetically engineer CD8+
lymphocytes to attack the EGFRvIII mutation present on human glioblastoma as well as VEGF
receptors on the developing vasculature of these tumors. Currently supervise the activity of one
post-doctoral fellow and two research technicians.
Bench Project: “Adenoviral delivery of Anti-angiogenic Agents” Role:Primary Investigator.
We are examining the effects of in vivo delivery of anti-angiogenic adenoviruses in the U87
glioma model.
Bench Project: "An Investigation into Gene and Stem Cell Based Therapies for Stroke" Role:
Primary investigator. This project involves the development on viral vectors as stroke treatments
as well as the development of stem cell based therapies for cellular replacement after stroke.
Includes collaborative efforts with scientists from the Genethon organization to develop novel
vectors for CNS transduction.
Bench Project: “Convection Enhanced delivery of Viral Vectors in the Central Nervous System”
Currently co-developing project with Drs. Richard Mulligan and Krys Bankiewicz for new
delivery techniques for viral vectors in the central nervous system.
Clinical Project: "Outcome Studies in Cerebrovascular Disease" Role: Investigator in a series of
studies examining standard outcome measures after subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral
hemorrhage, large volume ischemic stroke, and unruptured aneurysm treatments.
