COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH TRAINING CONSORTIUM Alameda County Family Court Services City of Fremont Youth and Family Services City of Hayward Youth and Family Services Family Service Counseling Center of San Leandro Girls Incorporated Child Abuse Reporting: Salvaging Clinical Connections in the Context of Mandated Reports Helen Hsu, Ph.D. Confidentiality is a key aspect of the clinician–client relationship. When a clinician must break confidentiality to comply with reporting laws, the client may feel angry or betrayed. Feelings of anger or betrayal are particularly common in situations of child abuse reporting, as overwhelmed parents often react defensively about perceived criticism of their parenting, and fear losing custody of their child. Premature termination of treatment after the report of child abuse occurs all too frequently. This course is designed to provide strategies to repair, salvage, and maintain clinical connection with a client or family following a mandated report. Following a brief review of clinician mandated reporting requirements, the instructor will focus on approaches to salvage rapport, as well as describe cultural factors to be considered in deciding upon techniques. The instructor will engage participants in practice with clinical vignettes that address mandated reporting with diverse families. Please note: This is an intermediate level course, designed for clinicians who are knowledgeable about California’s child abuse reporting laws.
