Counting and Understanding
Number
Knowing and Using Number
Facts
1 Counting Forwards:
Count animals as they go into the field
2 Counting Backwards
Count animals as they go out of the field
3 Estimating and Counting a set of objects
Estimate how many sheep are in the shed? Count them, do check
How many animals are in the field?
4 Reading and writing Numerals
Give fields numbers, send the animals to field number 1
5 Comparing and ordering Numerals:
Which shed holds more animals?
Which field has the greatest number of sheep?
6 Place Value:
Sort animals into ten and units. Only ten animals are allowed in each field. Sort the animals to assist you in
counting them.
7 Number Sequences and Odd and Even Numbers :
Put animals into pairs, How many? Is there one left over?
8 Doubling and Halving:
Take equal numbers of animals from 2 fields. How many altogether?
Half the cows go for milking. How many cows are left in the field?
The hens laid 5 eggs yesterday. Today they laid double the amount. How many eggs do you have today?
9 Ordinal Number:
Order the cows to be milked
Write rosettes for a farming show.
1 Derive and Recall Pairs of Numbers :
Play with 10 cows. Hide some in the shed. If you can see 4 cows, how many are in the shed?
Share animals into 2 fields. Write the numbers on the fence to keep track of the number of animals in each field.
2 Recall and Find Doubles and Halves:
Half the animals escape from the field. How many are left?
3 Counting in Steps:
Put five sheep in each shed. Count in fives to total number of sheep.
Calculating
4 Patterns, Relationships and Checking :
1 Vocabulary and Symbols for calculating
For sale poster. Sheep costs 3p, cow 2p; how much will the farmer pay?
2 Adding small numbers :
For sale poster. Sheep costs 3p cow 2p how much will the farmer pay?
4 pigs are in one field and 3 pigs are in another field. How many pigs altogether?
3 Subtracting small numbers
Some animals have escaped. How many are left?
4 Adding Larger Numbers :
Sheep are £20 each. How much for 2 sheep?
5 Subtracting Larger Numbers :
Buy a sheep for 70p how much change for £1
6 Addition and Subtraction – Using Inverse
10 animals in the shed. Some animals escape, how many now? The farmer puts them back. How many now?
7 Multiplication and Division
The 4 hens have each laid 2 eggs each. How many altogether?
The hens have laid 12 eggs. Share them between two egg boxes.
Share the 6 horses between 2 fields.
