traditional classes and distance delivered classes. Complete academic responsibility for
courses: select course content, present lecture, laboratory, and field sections, assign grades,
and provide documentation for accreditation. Enjoy teaching non-traditional and
underprepared students. Advise and mentor students. Routinely use many pedagogical
approaches and technologies including lecture, lab, and field sessions, powerpoint, email,
scientific software, computer conferencing and course web sites. Experienced in using field
sampling gear and laboratory equipment in class setting.

Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II (22+ semesters on campus, 20+ semesters distance)
Microbiology (2 semesters campus, 2 semesters distance/campus combined)
Natural History of Alaska (5 semesters, on campus)
Intertidal Biology (3 semesters, on campus)

Biology & Society (1 semester, on campus)
General Zoology (1 semester, on campus)
Alaska Naturalist Program: Seashore Life (9 semesters on campus, 4 semesters distance)
Science for K-8 Teachers (1 semester, distance)
Overview of Program / Curriculum Development at UAS Sitka Campus
Substantial involvement in program development and planning. Participate fully in
accreditation process. Work with regional faculty to establish new courses, revise existing
course descriptions, and coordinate course offerings. Helped establish Natural History of
Alaska & Biology and Society as the first GER biology courses at UAS designed for
nonmajors. Work closely with nursing coordinator, health information management
coordinator, continuing education coordinator and advising center to ensure that science
course offerings match the programmatic needs of the Sitka Campus. Communicate with
other health care programs to ensure proper articulation of prerequisites for transfer students.
Collaborated with Ketchikan and Juneau faculty while developing and then teaching seven
courses new to the Sitka campus. Oversee Sitka biology offerings in UAS 6 year plan.
Extensive curriculum development experience. Member of Human Anatomy and
Physiology Society curriculum committee; collaborate with other faculty from throughout
the US and Canada to develop position papers, revise guidelines and create learning
outcomes for undergraduate courses in human anatomy and physiology. Member of UAS
curriculum committee. Most of the courses I teach were not previously taught at Sitka and
required complete curriculum development or extensive curriculum revision. Skilled at
blending a variety of teaching technologies and pedagogical approaches. Courses that I
established at the Sitka Campus: Intertidal Biology, Microbiology, General Biology and
General Zoology. New to all of UAS: Natural History of Alaska, Alaska Naturalist Program,
Biology & Society. Designed and delivered first distance science lab courses offered at UAS.
Mentored professional colleagues and assistants. Collaborated with other faculty
members to create faculty handbook guidelines on the scholarship of teaching; these
guidelines are now used to evaluate all UAS teaching faculty for tenure and promotion.
Chaired and served on UAS faculty hiring committees. Mentored new Sitka biology faculty
member, faculty members developing distance offerings in other disciplines and new Juneau
human anatomy and physiology faculty. Routinely hire and mentor biology adjunct faculty
for Sitka Campus. Routinely hire, train, and supervise teaching and lab assistants for my
classes and to provide lab support for other faculty. Supervise peer tutors for campus and
distance students.

Highlights of Curriculum Development at UAS Sitka Campus
Human Anatomy and Physiology - Distance Delivery.
 Converted lecture and lab curriculum to extremely effective combination of
asynchronous online delivery, hands on and virtual lab experiences, and synchronous
audioconferences.
 Developed and delivered laboratory modules that included computer-simulated and
actual dissections, computer-simulated and actual physiological experiments, selfinitiated field trips to medical facilities, and group learning activities.
 Distance (and campus) sections of this course have been independently accredited by the
National Health Information Management Society and are accepted by UA allied health
programs, MEDEX Physician Assistant Program, Weber State Nursing Program and
other professional training programs.
 The distance course has been successfully completed by hundreds of students and
delivered to more than 30 Alaskan communities. Many students are now health care
professionals.
Alaska Naturalist Program Curriculum Coordinator
 Developed the curriculum for an entirely new program designed for the professional
training of naturalists/guides and teachers, and to appeal to the general public.
 During my three years as curriculum coordinator, the program was completed by
hundreds of students in eight different Alaskan communities. The program continues to
be offered locally and in a statewide, on-line format.
 Continue to provide general program guidance and to present intertidal biology sections.
Microbiology – Distance Delivery
 Converted lecture to a combined asynchronous online and synchronous audioconference
format.
 Developed and delivered laboratory modules combined with an intensive one-week
laboratory class that students must attend on campus.
Natural History of Alaska
 Designed entirely new curriculum using local and statewide natural history to emphasize
important taxonomic and ecological principles.
 Developed field trips, species lists, lab activities, on line resources and powerpoint
presentations focused on the flora, fauna and physical setting of Alaska.
 The course is offered yearly and much of the original curriculum is still used by the
adjunct now teaching it.
Intertidal Biology
 Developed and delivered this course for the first time at the UAS Sitka Campus.
 Focused on local intertidal biology, developed extensive field experiences.
Lab Management at UAS Sitka Campus
Helped to design UAS Sitka Campus science labs, managed labs since 2000. Supervise,
mentor and train lab assistants and student workers. Assure inventory control, safety
compliance, routine maintenance and upkeep of lab equipment and supplies, and appropriate
support of all laboratory users, including high school classes and visiting researchers.
Recently completed voluntary OSHA consultation inspection and training; updated and
revised chemical hygiene practices. Currently assisting in planning for lab expansion.
