Care of the surgical client, diabetic client, the oncologic client, the client with infectious disease, the client with alterations in fluid balance in shock states. Emphasis is placed on identification of potential and actual client problems with the implementation of critical thinking in planning and implementation of care for clients. Content related to education, communication, and pharmacology is included within the topics. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Client centered care: The student will deliver safe and effective care to surgical clients, diabetic clients, clients with cancer, infectious diseases, shock, and alterations in fluid balance. 2. Compare and contrast types of shock. 2. Differentiate treatments and nursing implications when caring for clients with various types of shock. 3. Initiation of care planning and nursing process for a client experiencing shock. Unit IV: Pain 1. Differentiate types/classifications of pain and influencing factors. 2. Content is aimed at the identification of potential and actual client problems and the use of critical thinking for planning and implementation of care. Content related to client education, communication, and pharmacology is integrated. Course Learning Objectives: 1. State of Connecticut – Eli Whitney Technical School Licensed Practical Nurse Program Maternal – Newborn Nursing (30 hours) Course Description: This course introduces the student to care of the maternal and family clients during the ante- intra- and postpartum periods. This course includes care of the newborn. The focus is on nursing care of the expectant family. The content addresses normal pregnancy as well as potential complications of the experience. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Client centered care: The student will implement the practical nurse’s role in the giving of safe and effective family centered care during the maternal process, recognizing family preferences, values, and needs. 2. Teamwork and Collaboration: The student will implement the role of the practical nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team for safe care delivery during the maternal experience. 3. Evidence-based practice: The student will incorporate research findings of best practice when planning care for the expecting family. 4. Quality: The student will analyze potential threats to the delivery of quality nursing care in the context of maternal-newborn nursing. 5.
