HISTORY WALKS FROM MAY 1 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 15.
Our 4th year of offering 90-minute history walks will change from a one-night a week for 16 weeks event to a by
advance reservation only event. Walks may be arranged for groups as small as three people and as large as thirty. Several
options on starting points. May be planned around a lunch or dinner stop. Groups of ten and under are $5 for each person.
For eleven to thirty walkers, the group rate is $55. Daytime and early evening times available. We are also developing
plans for history tours by carriage ride and bus in the future. Call us to discuss tailoring something for your special event.
WE WILL SOON BE MOVING!! PHASE TWO IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!!! WILL YOU HELP?
On September 10, 2003, a group of residents met at the first interest group meeting for our Museum, creating a
steering committee which became a Board of Trustees on October 9, 2003. We received our Provisional Charter from the
Regents of the State of New York on April 20, 2004, and our 501(c)(3) status retroactively to that date soon after. We
opened to the public here at 314 Oliver in the fall of 2004 in what was then donated space. In September 2005, we became
rent-paying tenants of our new landlord. As those who have visited here and have followed our development know, we ran
out of room here long ago and the conditions have always been less than ideal, and especially so for a museum with such
precious collection items to care for.
We are presently putting the legal agreements in place for a lease of approximately 3,300 square feet of space on
the first floor of the Gersh Building (formerly Lowry Middle School—and originally North Tonawanda High School) at
621 Payne Avenue. We anticipate the development of a collaborative arrangement with Gersh Experience to provide work
experience and other volunteer and service learning opportunities to their students as we already do with other colleges,
universities, and high school students.
We need helpers to pack, label, move, unpack, organize, take down and set up our collections and other
possessions. We need your help in donating the use of dollies, handcarts, pick up trucks, vans, or other vehicles for
moving our things.
As we go from our Phase One status to Phase Two, which will also require the hiring of paid permanent staff, we
also need your donations, large or small, as we get ourselves into position to proceed with serious grant writing and other
fund raising. As 2006 draws to a close, please consider year end tax donations – or pledges of regular sums, large or small
– to enable us to cover our first year of Phase Two. We need your help as we get into position to pursue and secure longterm funding we have previously been unable to pursue because we lacked an appropriate site to plan around.
The Board of Trustees of the North Tonawanda History Museum is indeed grateful for your loyal support and
faith in us thus far. Help us make the transition to Phase Two!
JOIN OUR LEGACY SOCIETY!
Send or deliver a written statement of your intention to make a bequest to the Museum in your will. You do not
need to specify an amount or percentage of your residual estate in the statement. Submitting such a statement of intent to
us will make you a Charter Member of the Legacy Society, entitling you to a certificate of recognition, one free dinner
reservation each year to future annual meetings & dinners, one free ticket to all fundraising events and programs with an
admission charge, publication of your name (unless you prefer anonymity) in future newsletters and annual reports, and
eventually on a permanent plaque in the permanent Museum home.
If you wish to use this method of donating to one of our endowment funds or our capital fund, you may
confidentially supply the amount and we will be able to credit you with that sum as a donation to the endowment or capital
fund in anticipation of the eventual transaction.
Either way, you may also make your bequest in memory of or in honor of a loved one or ancestor—or in your
family’s name.
3
YEAR END & OTHER TAX PLANNING THOUGHTS
Did you know that you can donate stock directly to the Museum, with the value being fully deductible on your tax
returns, and eliminating capital gains taxes that would normally apply on a sale? Stocks gifted to the North Tonawanda
History Museum will not result in a sale, and the full market value can be claimed by you as an itemized deduction, subject
to adjusted gross income limitations.
Did you know that, by designating the North Tonawanda History Museum as a beneficiary or partial beneficiary
on a life insurance policy, the donation will avoid having to go through probate.
Those 70-1/2 and older may also make direct donation to the North Tonawanda History Museum of all or part of
the required annual distribution, reducing taxable income by that amount and providing an itemized contribution deduction.
Do talk to your tax advisor or attorney. We recommend that you work closely with them to determine the best
strategy or strategies for your particular circumstances.
HISTORIC GARDENS CONTEST 2006 WINNERS!
We announced the winners of its 2nd annual Historic Gardens Contest at the September 21 Industrial Heritage
Night program at the North Tonawanda Senior Center. Museum Trustee Margaret Cheeley, Director Donna Zellner Neal,
and Tonawanda News’ Towpath Tiller made the award presentations. The contest and tour were originally suggested by
the Towpath Tiller in the fall of 2004 and his suggestion resulted in the Museum’s development of the first contest and tour
in 2005 and this year’s contest and tour.
Three cast bronze plaques were awarded to the top three winners, reading “North Tonawanda History Museum
Historic Gardens Contest Winner 2006.” First prize was awarded to Daniel Evans Brick, whose side and rear shade
gardens at 226 Niagara Street incorporate plantings of a wonderfully historic flavor, including spectacular and unique
peonies. All plantings in the gardens are over fifty years old! The Brick family is also an important part of North
Tonawanda’s history, and their home was once owned by the Moses family, descendents of one of the City’s early
prominent attorneys, James Theodore Moses. In addition to the plaque, Brick received a garden statue of St. Francis of
Assisi. Second prize was awarded to Richard and Diane Rog, whose sheltered private Victorian garden in the rear of
their home at 110 Niagara Street, complete with deck, gazebo, fountain, sun dial, and private areas, is an unexpected
pleasure. Third prize was awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mileham, whose front and rear gardens at 211 Falconer
Street were part of the tour. The superb front garden of unique plantings replaces a lawn. The rear garden is superb as
well.
Certificates of recognition were also presented to Pane’s Restaurant and The NT Inner Circle Society at City
Hall “for contributions through the combination of history and gardening to the quality of life of the residents of the
City of North Tonawanda.” Pane’s floral displays are a delight to see and should encourage area businesses to participate
next year. The NT Inner Circle Society was established this year to participate in the contest and to enhance and beautify
the City’s hub of operations. Seven additional gardeners received minor prizes for their participating gardens.
The Western New York Association of Historical Agencies awarded the Museum an Honorable Mention
Organizational Award of Merit for our Historic Gardens Contest and Tour 2006 at their November 4 Annual Meeting &
Conference at Genesee
WEATHER CANCELS EVENT!
Our 2nd annual HAUNTED GARDENS ON THE EEEErie CANAL which was scheduled to take place this year
on October 13, 20, and 27 from 7 to 10 p.m. had to be canceled because of the disastrous October 12 & 13 storm and the
resulting closing of the parks. Danielle Oney, Event Coordinator, and advisors Joann Mis and Carl Tamburlin will save
their scripts for next October. The event will bring back the popular Haunted Hayride presented by Hartland Carriages, the
Haunted Greenhouse with refreshments and gift items for sale, and a new guided Spooky Stroll through the Haunted
Gardens. Refreshments will be by Gullo’s Macaroni Grill. Those scheduled to participate are encouraged to be a part of
next year’s event. Additional students and youth groups are invited to contact the Museum if they wish to participate in
2007.
This was our second 2006 event to suffer from inclement weather, our first History Weekend in GratwickRiverside Park during Canal Fest in July was not as successful as we’d hoped because of heavy rain on the first day—and
rain and HAIL! on the final day.

Our 1st Bi-annual Ethnic Heritage Festival, North Tonawanda: A Celebration of Our Diversity! on October 7,
2006, in the Sportsplex Family Entertainment Complex earned us a favorable editorial in the Am-Pol Eagle
following the event and much praise from those who attended. Special thanks to our Major Sponsors, The Buffalo
News and the New York Council for the Humanities Speakers in the Humanities Program. The 2008 festival:
North Tonawanda: A Celebration of Multiculturalism! already has drawn new participants. VOLUNTEERS

A $150 grant was received from the Upstate History Alliance to permit Museum Administrative Assistant
Courtney Reichman to take an online course in Collections Management.
Clinton Brown, Preservation Architect, and Barbara Moore, Conservator, completed our Conservation
Assessment Project report in October under our grant from Heritage Preservation in Washington, D.C.. We are
presently using the 100+ page report as we initiate our grant writing and other fund raising efforts for Phase Two.
“Why Archives Matter,” an exhibit on loan from the Upstate History Alliance has been on display at the North
Tonawanda Public Library during November and will be in the lobby of Greater Buffalo Savings Bank during
December.
HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS
The North Tonawanda History Museum has advance sale tickets for 2007 events for those wishing to give unusual
holiday gifts or to participate in any events. Advance registration may also be made for two 2007 events for yourself—or
as gifts. The Museum now accepts Visa Card and Master Card payments.
SIMPLE GIFTS CONCERT
Tickets are available for the February 17, 2007, “Simple Gifts” Concert in the Historic Riviera Theatre.
Admission includes a free post-concert workshop about the instruments, “Meet the Artists & Instruments.” This
workshop will give audience members the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the musicians, to see their instruments up
close, and to ask questions. In previous workshops, this sort of session has encouraged people who thought they had no
musical talent at all to start playing instruments such as hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery, and folk piano. “Simple
Gifts” is a 3-woman group from Pennsylvania which includes twelve instruments. They draw on an impressive variety of
ethnic folk styles, combining tradition with innovation. They create some of the finest arrangements of folk music today.
Linda Littleton, Rachel Hall, and Karen Hirshon switch between two violins, concertina, mandolin, banjolin, recorders,
bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, baritone fiddle, guitar, piano, and percussion. Tickets are: Adults-$12; Seniors-$10;
ages 5-16: $5; ages 4 and under are free but should have a ticket.
Musicians are also invited to register for a free 2 p.m. workshop on the same day, specifically for musicians. Join
the band! Musicians who attend will become part of the band. Together the band will arrange a piece of music to be
performed during the evening concert. Depending upon the group’s level and interest, topics such as creating harmony
lines, playing interesting and varied back up rhythms, creating a distinctive band sound, and making your sound and
presentation as professional as possible will be included. All instruments and levels are welcome. At the Historic Riviera
Theatre. Free, but reservations are recommended. Call the Museum for further information.
HISTORIC TREASURES TOUR 2007
The North Tonawanda History Museum Historic Treasures Tour Committee has begun plans for the 2007 event.
The Museum’s 2nd bi-annual tour of historic homes on Sunday, August 5, 2007, from noon to 6 p.m. will feature ten of
North Tonawanda’s most interesting homes. Cipriano, Inc., Realtors; the law firm of Brick, Brick & Elmer;
Humphrey House Antiques; and Pioneer Printers have become major sponsors for the event. A Cinderella carriage ride
by Hartland Carriages will be included for those wishing to participate in this experience. Architectural historian
services for the event will be provided by Clinton Brown Company Architecture. Free shuttle vans between sites will be
provided by Keyser Buick of Tonawanda. Gullo’s Macaroni Grill will provide refreshments for participants throughout
the day. Joe and Jim Zellner will be coordinating the antique cars parked in front of each participating home.
Marilyn P. Lasky is Chair of the 2007 event, and will be assisted by the 2005 Chair Betty A. Brandon, and Paula
Belair, Margaret Cheeley, David Walders, Peter Trinkwalder, Diane Meholick, Barbara Wickman, and Museum Director
Donna Zellner Neal. Lasky is a life-long and 4th generation resident of North Tonawanda and a Trustee of the North
Tonawanda History Museum. Presently a customer service representative for Impressive Imprints, she served previously
as Senior Buyer for the Catholic Health System, and as Purchasing Director for Kenmore Mercy Hospital.

The North Tonawanda History Museum’s first award-winning historic homes tour, “Historic Treasures Tour
2005,”on July 31, was attended by visitors from five states, Canada, and all over New York State, with a significant
number of visitors expressing serious interest in relocating to North Tonawanda if the appropriate historic home were
available for purchase in the future. The 2005 tour was the first of what is expected to be a bi-annual event in oddnumbered years, rotating with an ethnic heritage festival in even-numbered years. RealtyUSA was the event’s major
sponsor in 2005.
The Western New York Association of Historical Agencies awarded the North Tonawanda History Museum an
Organizational Award of Merit for excellence in presenting the 2005 tour and the 65-page guidebook created as the
passport to the tour which has continued to be purchased by people from all over the country.
Museum representatives are presently initiating the screening process for candidate homes for inclusion in the
2007 tour. Homeowners interested in discussing having their home featured in the tour are invited to contact the Museum.
Realtors and mortgage companies interested in serving as event sponsors are also invited to contact the Museum.
The event’s primary purpose is to present and promote North Tonawanda as a wonderful city in which to live.
North Tonawanda is described by Museum representatives as “the best little city in New York State, with a small town
atmosphere and a rich and unique history.”
In conjunction with the bi-annual tours, the Museum has established a North Tonawanda History Museum
Historic Treasures Recognition Plaque program. Cast bronze plaques may be purchased through the Museum for
installation on historic homes and buildings in the City.
A limited number of tickets will be sold. Last year’s tickets sold quickly; those wishing to participate in the 2007
tour are advised to order their tickets early. Payment may be made by cash, check, money order, or by Master Card or
Visa. Advance sale tickets are $18 each ($15 for Museum members), with a $5 ticket also available for the carriage ride.
HISTORIC PLAQUES PROGRAM
The North Tonawanda History Museum Historic Treasures Recognition Program provides an opportunity for
City residents and businesses or other organizations to recognize and promote the history of their property and to
encourage interest in the history of North Tonawanda’s homes and other structures. It is an ongoing program. Plaques
may be obtained through the Museum for any property for which historical documentation is available. Your property
does not need to have been officially designated as historical to qualify for this program. Museum personnel will assist
property owners in determining the historical nature of their property.
Oval cast bronze plaques with a choice of brown, black, or dark green background, and a choice of 11”x8”,
10”x7”, or 7”x 5” size are available. Suggested wording on the plaques would include a commonly accepted historical
name of the home or building, such as “The Wurlitzer Home,” and/or the street address or house number, and/or “Designed
by (architect or builder). Each plaque will contain the wording: “North Tonawanda History Museum Historic Treasures
Recognition Program”.
To see sample layouts and what the plaques look like, visit our online museum at www.nthistorymuseum.org.
The scroll on the home page has a link to take you directly to the information about the program. You may also download
an application form to order your plaque by mail. You may also see some of the plaques already purchased by residents,
including those at 332 Goundry Street, 338 Goundry Street, and 121 Payne Avenue. St. Peter’s Lutheran Brethren Church
at the corner of Bryant and Thompson Streets has also joined the program.
All properties participating in the program will become part of the Museum’s future walking history tours and will
be included in appropriate printed materials and publications of the Museum. Individuals, groups, or businesses wishing to
sponsor plaques for community sites, such as parks, cemeteries, churches, schools, etc., may do so as well.
Preservation Month Bus Tour
For the second year, the North Tonawanda History Museum, the Historical Society of North German
Settlements in Western New York, and the Sanborn Area Historical Society are collaborating on a Preservation Month
Bus Tour. The Historical Association of Lewiston is joining us this year as well.
Set for Saturday, May 19, 2007, the tour will include a visit to the Cobblestone Society Museum in Childs, with
a tour of seven historic buildings and two talks by Museum Director Bill Lattin; lunch at Tillman’s Historic Village Inn;
and a tour of the Medina Railroad Museum (including a Big Train cookie, coffee, tea, or juice. Time permitting, and if
desired by the group, on the way back, there will be a stop for ice cream cones at a farmer’s market. Lunch selections

Tour and Lunch Sites
Cobblestone Society Museum – the only cobblestone museum in the world showcases the unique masonry construction
method using rock rounded and polished into cobble by glacial action. Tour includes seven buildings housing artifacts
from 1825-1860, including the oldest cobblestone church in New York and the cobblestone parsonage once owned by
Horace Greeley. Designated a National Historic Landmark.
Medina Railroad Museum – Located in the old New York Central freight depot in Medina, NY, it is the largest freight
depot museum in the country. The building itself was built in 1905, and is one of the largest (301 ft. by 34 ft.) last
surviving wooden freight depots in the United States. Features the largest collection of artifacts and memorabilia known to
exist under one roof. Also includes the longest HO scale layout and diorama all on one floor, an immense 14 ft. by 204 ft.
Time will be allowed to browse in the gift shop.
Tillman’s Historic Village Inn – A historic inn and restaurant in operation since 1824.
Preservation Month serves as a showcase for our country’s diverse and unique heritage. Thousands of
state and local community groups are honoring their distinct histories this month through various activities and are
seeking to bring historic preservation to the forefront of Americans’ daily lives by emphasizing the vital importance
of protecting our nation’s past. This second joint bus tour is an effort by four Western New York historical
organizations to participate together in celebrating Preservation Month.
