JOB SUMMARY: The Education Program Specialist reports to the Curator of Historic Sites and is a full-time
benefited position working approximately 40 hours per week. Their primary function is coordinating activities and
administering historic programs in an entertaining and accessible way to visitors of all ages through museum living
history presentations, events, classes, tours and outreach initiatives. Responsibilities include: administering and booking
educational, public and private tours and events in support of the Museum’s educational mission; collaborating on new
initiatives with school and internal stakeholders; managing inventories of educational props and equipment; cataloguing
artifacts in museum education collection; scheduling outreach events and school festivals, and preparing and tracking
invoices to school district, teachers and groups.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE &
EDUCATION: Equivalent combination of the following:









AA degree or certification program of comparable length
desired
Two years of related experience required - three or more
years of related experience desired;
Basic knowledge of research techniques and historic
method.
Demonstrated ability to communicate history utilizing
dynamic 1st and 3rd person interpretive techniques.
Demonstrates understanding of Educational Curriculum
and standards.
Valid driver’s license and good driving record;
Intermediate computer skills including MS Windows and
MS Office products;
Knowledge of larger western heritage and local history
helpful.
Knowledge and functional familiarity of authentic historic
trades, lifeways, and skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Must have the ability to:





Effectively implement Museum best practices as it relates
to handling and storing education objects.
Effectively communicate with citizens, teachers and other
school officials, contracted presenters, volunteers, and
staff on the phone, in person, or electronically.
Supervise and direct seasonal employees and volunteers.
Follow written and verbal instructions, policies, and
procedures.
Serve as public liaison to Schools, Institutions, and
Educators.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in both an office setting as well as at



each of the four museum sites, and occasionally at offsite
locations.
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors in a variety
of weather conditions;
Some programs happen overnight, weekends and off
hours.
Knowledge of basic accounting and cash handling.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:








Communications skills enough to convey information
verbally or in writing;
Stamina enough to perform job duties on uneven working
and walking surfaces;
Stamina sufficient to stand for long periods of time on
concrete floors or uneven ground.
Ability to cross back and forth over long distances (up to
eight acres).
May be required to move and bend, twist and stoop in
performance of job duties.
Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds
unassisted.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision,
distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception and ability to adjust focus.
Must be comfortable long periods working in authentic
historic clothing.
