In this course you may choose to build your own cabin (self-builder) or to be a regular course
participant where you help to build another’s cabin. If you would like to be a self-builder, you must
provide the drawings and the materials yourself. The maximum size of a lafted cabin is 20 m squared.
During the course, you will make a good start on the walls of the cabin. You will learn about
materials, dimensioning and quality standards. You will also learn to set up the necessary tools.
Participants must bring along their own hand tools and protective gear. It is possible to rent lafting
tools for NOK 300. Ottar Romtveit is a building master and works professionally with lafting. The

Work with Silver / Filigree

Make your own filigree brooch. This course is geared towards those who have some experience
working with silver. We will work with different filigree techniques such as twisting wire, making
flourishes, melting beads, etc. Hammering silver plates and sawing techniques are also a natural part
of the work. If there is ample time, we will look at stone setting. In the end, we will treat the surface of
the jewelry. There will be some additional costs for the silver raw materials. Gunnhild Astrid Evju has
an apprenticeship diploma in filigree, education from the National College of Arts and Industry in
Oslo, and a Masters Degree from Telemark University College, Rauland. The course lasts from

Decorated Sheepskin Blankets, traditional sewing and printing

As a participant, you will learn to cut and sew a sheepskin blanket by hand using traditional methods.
Participants will learn about appropriate materials, tools for skinnfell sewing, traditional uses of
colour, composition and ornamentation in decorative printing, and will practice printing on the sheep
skins themselves. Britt Solheim has held skinnfell courses for many years and has published the book
“Skinnfeller du kan lage selv” (Sheepskin Blankets You Can Make Yourself). No prior experience
necessary. The cost of materials depends on the type of skins and how many you choose to decorate.
The price of each skin varies from NOK 900-1500. It is customary to use 4-6 skins. Other materials,
including skjærnåler (cutting needles), pincers and linen thread, cost NOK 400 all together. Britt
Solheim can procure materials and has tools available for rent for those who require them. She will
send additional information about skins and prices to all participants before the course. She would also
like to confer with each participant beforehand about the type and size of the skins they wish to use.

Tapestry Weaving

This course is for new, and also for experienced, tapestry weavers. You are welcome to weave
traditionally or experimentally depending on your own wishes. During the course, you will be taught
basic techniques in both traditional and in newer variations. For beginners, it is wise to start with a test
piece. The teacher will provide schematics and yarn. Or, if you have a pattern in mind, you will
receive help to make your own composition. There is no need to be skilled at drawing to take this
course. Tapestry weaving is a wide field and you can decide for yourself which area you would like to
work with: techniques, colors, combination of materials, composition or expression. You must have

those who have done a great deal of work with digital cameras, but who would like to sharpen
their skills regarding, for example, the possibilities afforded by a digital camera. It coule be
advantageous to have a “speilrefleks” camera with one or more “objectives”. After a review
of how a digital camera works, we emphasize the following aspects: shutter, white balance,
ISO, correct use of flash, photography without a flash, angle of light, macro-photography,
light compensation, effects with different shutter speeds, zoom, making photo art, concrete
and abstrakt motifs, composition, picture elements, etc. Course participants must bring their
own digital camera with the instruction manual, charger and preferably two memory cards.

worn out? If so, you can learn to make completely new garments out of those old clothes. During this
course, you will receive guidance for bringing out your own ideas and wishes. You will learn to take
apart old clothing and use the pieces to make a new garment. Perhaps you would like to preserve some
small details from the old garment. Could a clasp or a lining be used again on a new piece of clothing?
When you have fitted the garment on a bust, you will learn sewing techniques necessary to achieve a
professional result. Bring along your used clothes that have slightly different qualities of fabric: thick,
thin, woven, knitted (jersey fabric or thicker knitwear). It could also be fun to bring along ribbon,

Would you like to make your own clothes, but do not know how to go about making sewing patterns?
Is it impossible to find clothes in exactly your size? Do you, for example, have a dress in mind that
you can never find in stores? Is there a favorite old worn out garment in your closet that you are
longing to have a copy of? In this course, we work with basic pattern construction for clothing,
particularly skirts, tops, and trousers. Participants choose a pattern, adjust it according their
preferences, and create a canvas model for testing, and continue adjustments until they have created
their own designs. You will learn how to adjust a basic pattern, make it bigger, change the shape and
place seams where you wish to make your own unique design. The last few days of the course will be
spent making the garment that you designed. Participants will learn how to use the pattern to clip out
fabric pieces for the garment, and the sewing techniques necessary to provide a professional-looking
result. During the sewing process, we use our own bodies for fittings if we are sewing for ourselves.

Willow basket weaving

This course is geared towards both new beginners and advanced basket weavers. Basic techniques in
basket weaving will be taught including making a star base, different side weavings, taking down the
edge, putting on a handle and waling or upsetting. We will begin with round basket making. Those
who wish may make baskets with a Catalan base. That will be an exciting and unusual basket. At the
end of the course, you will have the opportunity to weave inspired yard ornaments. Participants can
either bring their own tools or borrow from Klara Pil. The essential tools are a sharp knife, garden
scissors, rapping iron, and sturdy awl. It would also be nice to have a weight and an old towel. Due to
practical reasons, Klara Pil must know the total number of registered course participants at least two

Children are divided into 5 groups and get one day at each base.
Base 1: Textile day. Learn to spin yarn on hand, create your own keychain with colorful bands. Create
your own jump rope. Crochet tough headband etc.
Base 2: Whittle day. You learn whittle various things in the raw material. You can borrow a good,
sharp whittling knife. Afterwards you can color the things you've made.
Base 3: Silver Day. You learn to create a bracelet or ankle bracelet in silver.
Base 4: Outdoors Day. A day outdoors in search of traces of birds and animals. Creating a fire and
cook a meal on fire, whittling etc.
Base 5: Food Day. Join in the kitchen and make soup and rolls for your group. Afterwards we make
lefse and flatbread.
The course starts Thursday morning and lasts until Sunday at 12. Meet Tuesday evening if you have

Leaded glass lamp

In this course, participants will make a lamp joined by lead. In the course of six days we will
learn about glass as a material, its historical background and the design process. We will get
an overview of famous stained glass throughout the world (with pictures) and explore
different styles that developed. Before we plan our own designs, we must understand what our
possibilities and limitations are in this medium. First, we practice glass cutting on normal
window glass before we can begin on our leaded glass window. Andras Varga is from
Hungary. He learned the leaded glass technique from a Serbian master. He has lived in
Norway since 2007 and worked with leaded glass in Tønsberg. He has restored stained glass
in the Uranienborg church and in the Tønsberg Cathedral. The cost of materials is

Raku pottery course

We use different techniques to mold the clay. Finally comes a beautiful miracle, raku burning.
"Rakubrenning" is burning without oxygen. Using a hole in the soil, sawdust, fire and high
temperature ceramics are burned and change color.
Erzsebet Kabai is one of the most famous ceramist in Hungary, she has received high awards for his
work and has the title folk art masterpiece. She speaks English, but will be assisted by Katalin who

Bookbinding is an old craft that appeals to both the dexterous and creative. The course will
demonstrate bookbinding techniques which you can do at home without too much special equipment.
We come to make a note or guestbook to exercise in technique and learn and understand the material.
Participants will learn how to make a photo album. We will decorate the paper so that each book is
unique.
Include at least four books that you wish to bind, and at least two books that you wish to repair. The
books should preferably not be valuable. Take even an ordinary paperback book or a collection of
loose sheets which you wish to bind. Material kit with everything you need, material and some hand

In this course, we will make approximately four meters of dense wool fabric. The fabric is in
natural colors (undyed). When you come to the course, you will learn how to use the loom.
When the fabric is woven, on Saturday, it will be stamped using a water-powered stamp in
