Social Justice Tribunals Ontario (SJTO) is a cluster of seven adjudicative
tribunals responsible for resolving a wide range of applications, appeals and
complaints brought under eight important public policy statutes. The Human
Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) is one of SJTO’s constituent tribunals.
Description:
As the Associate Chair of the HRTO, you bring proven leadership skills to the
SJTO to ensure the delivery of efficient, effective and high quality adjudicative
and dispute resolution services. You will be responsible for providing day-to-day
oversight of the tribunal and hear applications under the Ontario Human Rights
Code. Working within a challenging, fast-paced and demanding environment,
the position requires confidence, compassion, critical thinking and superior
interpersonal and communications skills. You will also work within a collegial
environment that is committed to SJTO’s core values of accessibility, fairness,
independence, timeliness, transparency, professionalism and public service.
The Adjudicative Tribunals Accountability, Governance and Appointments Act,
2009 provides that all appointments shall be made through a competitive, meritbased process, with criteria for appointments that include:
1. Experience, knowledge or training in the subject matter and legal
issues dealt with by the tribunal.
2. Aptitude for impartial adjudication.

3. Aptitude for applying alternative adjudicative practices and procedures
that may be set out in the tribunal's rules.
In addition to demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, applicants

Appointment is by Order-in-Council for an initial two year term, subject to
renewal for a maximum of 10 years.
Annual remuneration of $146,700 plus benefits in accordance with the benefit
entitlements of the Senior Management Group of the Ontario Public Service.
This position is based in Toronto with travel.
