Post-doctoral Research Fellowship, Environment Canada, Ottawa: Estimation of sea ice properties from satellite SAR data The Canadian Ice Service of Environment Canada, located in Ottawa, Canada, is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to study the use of satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for the estimation of sea ice properties. The goal of the project is to develop and evaluate approaches for improving objective estimates of sea ice conditions used to initialize coupled numerical ice-ocean-atmosphere models. The fellow will apply this research within the context of the sea ice data assimilation system developed in collaboration with the Environment Canada Meteorological Research Division. In this way satellite SAR data will be combined with numerous other data sources related to the sea ice and ocean properties. The work will be performed as part of a dynamic research team and contribute to improving both operational sea ice products and numerical weather forecasts of the Meteorological Service of Canada. Qualifications: Ph.D. in oceanography or meteorology or related field with experience in remote sensing of sea ice, geophysical data assimilation or sea ice modelling and experience with Fortran programming in a UNIX environment. Applications are currently being accepted and the position will remain open until filled. The position is available for up to three years pending annual review and availability of funds. The fellowship is a Visiting Fellowship in Canadian Government Laboratories administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). This program provides promising young scientists and engineers with the opportunity to work with research groups in Canadian government laboratories and research institutions. The annual salary range is $50,000 to $55,000 (Cdn) depending on qualifications.
